Re: Lebda
I'm going have to jump in here as the resident Wings fan and laugh...are you serious with that price? Burke's made some solid moves this summer with adding Versteeg and Armstrong but $1.45 million for a guy that can't crack 20 points (albeit he was buried on the Wings as a #6 or #7 defenseman). I think this is a silly move for the Leafs considering how deep they already appeared to be defense. If he goes out and puts up 10 goals and 40 points with the Leafs and blossoms after leaving the Wings (a la Samuelsson in Vancouver)...then I'll gladly eat my words. The guy was expendable in Detroit and no way would they have considered retaining him and more than double what he was making in his previous contract.
Re: Lebda
dude, he'll be our #6 #7 as well... and 1.4M is not very much for a vet dman.... crazy to judge him for his points he puts up, for us he'll be physical and hopefully pretty reliable defensively. It tells me there are moves coming.

lebda a physical presence?facey wroteCOLONdude, he'll be our #6 #7 as well... and 1.4M is not very much for a vet dman.... crazy to judge him for his points he puts up, for us he'll be physical and hopefully pretty reliable defensively. It tells me there are moves coming.
Re: Lebda
Ye, he'll pick it up for the leafs (despite his size)... my point was that he was not signed @ 1.4M for his point production, he'll be a filler ad ideally a stable dman for a couple of minutes each night.

1.4mil (Vet) Dmen arn't usually 20min guys.Shoalzie wroteCOLONI'm going have to jump in here as the resident Wings fan and laugh...are you serious with that price? Lebda IMO will be paired with a bigger/physical presence. He might see 2nd unit PP, but i doubt any PK time - however i could be wrong.
He's a great signing for a 5-6 guy, who should bring some solidity do the backend. This just leads us to believe one of Kaberle, Beauchemin, or Schenn is gone now.
Finger to the minors is a given.

Re: Lebda
He's a good skater and has strong shot...he can be a decent PP guy. If he's good for anything...it's for his offensive abilities but he's not going to make you forget about Borje Salming or even Dave Ellett. He was a 3rd pair defenseman his entire time in Detroit...he's small (5-9), hardly hits and doesn't kill penalties. I don't kill the guy for going out and getting paid solid bread in the open market but he wasn't kept by the Wings for a reason. I'm just warning you guys to not expect too much from him. I figured he'd get another gig somewhere but I didn't expect to see someone overpay for him.
Re: Lebda
lebda for 1.4 or shane obrien at 1.6? thats the price of a more vetren dman like it or not. I would take O'Brien over lebda because I would rather my 6th be physical, but its not an overpayment for him.
on another note I think this answers nick and scotts argument from earlier and almost garuntees kindl will be starting this year with the big club!
and you countered your first statment with that second one lol. no offencive guy will put up big numbers on detroit when you have lidstrom, kronwall or rafalski in front of you on the depth chart.but $1.45 million for a guy that can't crack 20 points (albeit he was buried on the Wings as a #6 or #7 defenseman).

Re: Lebda
Yea, Kindl has got his opportunity now, however Smith & Pyett will put up at least a little competition.
Non-rookie, & quasi-reliable NHL dmen aren't free.. sucks but they make a difference.
Not exactly the fringe Dman I'd expect from Burke, but hopefully they (Nonis/Burke/Lebda) know something about his game we don't. I'd rather O'brien as well...LOL

Re: Lebda
not a good day for leafs fans when the line "I'd rather have O'Brien" comes out. Hopefully for your guy's sake, he just didnt fit that system. He looked terrible often out of position and what not, but he wasnt a give away machine or a horrible minus player at least. Although that system has made shit players like drew miller look like they belong in the nhl, so my hopes wouldnt be too high.

This signing is only going to help the leafs.mr. bruin wroteCOLONI'm all over this signing...The more players the Leafs sign that could hurt them in the standings the better for the Bruins. We'd like another Tyler Seguin to complete the non-necessary rebuild
Kaberle trade - Kadri - Kessel
Kulemin - Bozak - Versteeg
Thats a decent looking and young top 6.
Seguin is going to bust anyways

Not me - I think Lebda was a great signing and will prove his importance to our team this season.facey wroteCOLONYea, Kindl has got his opportunity now, however Smith & Pyett will put up at least a little competition.

Lol..yea, keep dreaming that he'll bust. I am pretty sure that you are the only person to ever say that. Poll everyone not a Leaf fan and see what the response is. He is the complete package. He'll be worth 3 Phil Kessels in about 3 years. You got the excited nervous Kessel last year looking to impress..This year you will get the lazy i got paid who gives a shit Kessel. you wait...But i don't disagree that is a nice top 6 who will be quite good maybe this year and definitely for years to follow.

Not necessarily true. If they hang onto Meech and add another veteran defenseman or re-sign Lilja...there's 7 defensemen right there. Kindl might end up in the AHL just so he can get regular playing time...same can be said about Ritola. They're considered the next guys to "graduate" but they don't have a spot left open for them.

It was meant to be a qualifying statement. Did he put up weak numbers because he just wasn't good enough or was it because of lack of opportunity to flourish? I guess we'll see in Toronto.
The guy isn't all that old and the Wings let the guy go knowing full well that they need to get another defenseman to replace him...and it's not like the remaining market is all that promising. The Wings will probably have a little over $1 million to spend after Helm and Abdelkader are re-signed and Meech's situation with arbitration or if he gets re-signed beforehand. Unless they make a trade, they'll have look for a #5/6 defenseman on the cheap and they're not necessarily ready to hand that job over to a guy in the system (Kindl, Smith, etc.) and they're slowly putting more faith into Ericsson.
