NHL new CBA
NHL new CBA
Not exactly the best hockey topic, but i thought we might try to keep all its crap in one place...
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=400580
not what i'd call an encouraging start, LOL.
It's gonna be a long off-season.

Re: NHL new CBA
Fehr probably wiped his ass with that first offer...no way the players roll back their cut that much.
Re: NHL new CBA
Fehr is going to kill the nhl (or try) just like he almost ruined baseball

I'm not a fan of him but he fights for the union and that's why they hired him.
Where I'll hate him and Selig for baseball in the 90s and early 2000s is how they looked the other way on drug testing.
Re: NHL new CBA
Im not the biggest fan of unions to be honest with you. Been held hostage as a student too many times.
With regards to baseball and the steroid pandemic. I wonder if it may have just saved the game. Dont you thjnk those homerun races between sammy and mark helped people forget about that terrrible strike and got them back to the ballparks? I dont follow baseball too religiously and never really have...this is just coming from someone who is just a bit more than a casual fan.

Re: NHL new CBA
Yeah, I'm anti-union also...living amongst the auto industry and working with a lot of skilled tradesmen to boot.
With the Sosa and McGwire thing, it was exciting for the game following the loss of a World Series but for me, I loved the game too much to not come back. I felt for Hank Aaron to see his record was broke in such a cheap way considering what he had to endure leading up to him breaking Ruth's record. If I didn't love baseball so much, I probably would've just told them to pound sand and never came back for that.
The NHL lost an entire season but didn't resort to something as unethical as a manufactured run a once unbreakable record. If you're going to lose games or a season due to the CBA, you damn well better get a deal that keeps the league in solid financial footing. I'd be very disappointed if the league is foolish enough to risk losing another season after the financial health the league is (supposedly) experiencing.

Re: NHL new CBA
The players themselves said they wanted a fair deal. Not a great start by the NHL.
Pretty classless by Bettman and company imo.

Fair Deal Steve apparently not present in the real world!
Re: NHL new CBA
Min's owner cry's poor and about the cap system, etc. Then turns around and drops 196 million on 2 players.
EDM's Katz demands the city pay up for his franchise to be there (in terms of a new arena). He's squeezing Edmonton for hundreds of millions and talks as though he's the one bestowing a generous gift on the city....read the article in the Globe.
What's happened in PHX is disgusting to the Glendale people. Totally fucked over by the NHL there.
I know it's the first offer which is going to be ridiculous by both sides, just how these things (stupidly) generally start off. So many of those terms though are for protecting the owner's from themselves. They are the ones that ultimately give the players the deals. Thing is, the players are the product as well...
On puckdaddy a couple of days ago there was a decently written piece about this from the player's perspective by "Player".

Re: NHL new CBA
it's good that they're trying to squash cap circumventing contracts, however a 5 year entry-level deal and 10 years before ufa eligibility will not sit well at all with the players..
Re: NHL new CBA
Although i am confident the first offer is designed to be 300% past ideal #, Offers like that are why the union is needed. Looking out for the next batch of players is done by numbers.
5 year entry is crazy, 10 year UFA is career limiting. 46% is 4% too low, current number is 7% too high. Unless the media mixed up the sides ( ie they might have asked for 43-46% for owners)
IMO should be, settle on:
50/50.
No change to ufa years
Contracts the same value every year
Less $ difference allows on two way deals
Remove offer sheets, or lower the costs.
Similar the Bctf - a deal in the middle makes sense, the positioning done by either side is straight up bs.

It will be settled on, im not worried, the first offer will always be high in negociations.Nick wroteCOLONAlthough i am confident the first offer is designed to be 300% past ideal #, Offers like that are why the union is needed. Looking out for the next batch of players is done by numbers.

The plays will counter and something inbetween will eventually be settled on.
Imo it settles at 50% split.
5 year contract max
UFA stays the same.
Consistant Salary numbers.

Re: NHL new CBA
It's a first offer I'm not surprised, the PA's first offer will likely be similar bullshit. I think the idea here is to start low and set the negotiation starting point at the current deal and the extreme the NHL's first offer (seen here). This gets the PA away from proposing a deal that's really any better than the current deal and negotiating down if that makes any sense?
I'd be shocked if half of any of this actually passes, the UFA thing will be a bargaining chip and 46% is purposely aiming low I'm pretty sure the owners would be happy with anything 50-53%.
What I imagine seeing:
5 Year Maximum deals OR 7-10 year Maximum deals but no contract year can be less than 50% of the highest paid year in the contract
Maybe hold off UFA years for 1 year or leave it the same.
50/50 split in revenues
Change offer sheets or remove them as they are currently useless
A larger gap in the floor and the cap (Don't want to see actually it but seems like it'll happen).
I think theres a 70% chance season starts on time, don't think they're stupid enough to lock out again.

Agreed, they are useless. I doubt the league actually gives a shit. Expect it will be a gracious concession on their part.inferno31 wroteCOLONChange offer sheets or remove them as they are currently useless.

as i expected, Bettman won't let the season begins unless a new deal is in place.

Re: NHL new CBA
I wouldn't expect the league to conduct business without a CBA...still more than a month before this deal expires.
