Laptop advice

Post by KapG »

Hey guys, just wanted some of your opinions on what direction I should go for the new laptop I want to purchase. Mainly just use it for poker, movies, music and surfing the net. Wouldn't mind being able to do a bit of gaming on it. Particularly Guild Wars 2. Not the main selling point for me though.

The max that I would like to spend before tax is about 799...

What do you guys think of the following two laptops?

Asus N Series N56DP: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/asu ... 0fbbfden02

Asus S Series S56CA: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/asu ... 716f4ben02

any other suggestions are welcome. These are just two I stumbled upon.

Lenovos are amazing, but I prefer the more business-ey line. Extremely well built. I'm on an X220. If you're interested in a small laptop with a full keyboard take a look at them. I've seen the i7 model going for ~$750 recently.

Yea I was considering the ThinkPad vs the IdeaPad because Im going to be using it for school, but in the end, the IdeaPad specs got the best of me.

My dad gets Lenovos at cost through work which is a bonus. Cant go wrong with either line.

The employee price plan is really easy to use... bought mine through it.

Here is a 167-page thread explaining how: http://forums.redflagdeals.com/lenovo-t ... in-777107/

Whatever you do try spend as little as you can on hdd and ram, upgrade those yourself. 2x4gb ram is easily found under 40 bucks, and ssd are dropping in price rapidly.

I didn't look at anything in this thread, but get the new Windows 8 Tablet/Laptop thing. It's legit.

Specs trump all to me. You can easily find a laptop that has:

i5 or better
2.2-3.2 GHz
8-16GB of RAM
750GB - 1TB but with everything moving to cloud this is not as important. If you're on a budget, sacrifice some hard drive for more RAM/processor speed or i7 and you'll be better off.

Max out those specs in your budget and you'll be fine. If that means getting a Windows 7 laptop - that is still awesome.

Whatever you do, don't get a Mac - overpriced pieces of shit. As long as you take care of your Windows laptop, you will always be better off.

forgot to mention; the intel network cards that come in the new lenovo's are atrocious. i constantly lose connection and have to reset the adapter. I've researched the problem and have found forums with 100s of people with the same issue dating back to the beginning of this year and intel hasn't done shit to fix it.

i use my nexus 7 for virtually everything right now because the internet on my laptop is essentially unusable.
