What? Sidney Crosby is the hands down winner.
No he isn't... You can't give a major award to a player who missed a significant portion of an already shortened season. It's far too small of a sample size. Further consider that the Hart Trophy is for the most valuable player, not the most oustanding player. It's pretty hard to argue that Crosby impacted the Penguins more in 36 games than Ovechkin did in 48 games.
Lol exactly my opinion.

For two guys that haven't been able to make trades with each other for a significant period of time, we sure do think a like on most topics that come up on these boards.

That probably explains why we can't make trades, we value players much the same way. I find I make the most trades with people who have vastly different valuations of players than I do.

No chance. The team trekked on without him.

Ovechkin entered Beast Mode and the Capitals went from an expected Bottom 5 finish to a division lead.

Crosby shouldn't even be a finalist, but the golden boy would be. And Crosby is a top 3 favorite player of mine, but when you miss 25% of the season that is a huge number.

Had Pittsburgh fallen down to 5th in the East that would have been different, but they won the East with ease without him.

I THINK Kessel deserves to be nominated as well, he did a pretty good job at carrying the leafs.

Ovechkin had 56 points in those same 48 games - the same as Crosby had in 36. This is not even a question in my mind. Crosby was rolling through the league before injury. 36/48 games is 75% of the season. The fact that the season is already shortened means nothing. 75% of 82 games would be roughly 60-62 games.

Btw this argument that "Crosby is not as valuable to his team as Ovechkin is to his" is nonsense. The definition of MVP is:

1. The player is one of the best in the league if not the best
2. The player is valuable to his team

But also:

3. If the player is moved to another franchise, the player would remain as valuable
4. If another player is brought onto the MVP candidate's team, the replacement player would not be able to do as good of a job.

If Crosby was on WSH, I imagine he could easily produce a similar result.

Lebron is still MVP even if he has Wade/Bosh. It doesn't matter if Durant may (debatable anyway) be more valuable to his team.

Shiv, you are confusing MVP with Most Outstanding Player, they are different...

#1 is not part of the MVP definition... The definition of the MVP is as follows:
The Hart Memorial Trophy is an annual award given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team
All that matters is value to the team...

There is literally no way of affirming that, it is a subjective thought experiment.

Hart Memorial Trophy

The Hart Memorial Trophy is an annual award given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team.

Bobrovsky should also be a finalist. Without him that team finishes bottom 5.

Now Shiv, if you wanted to argue that the MVP award is subjective and/or inferior to the most outstanding player award then I completely agree with you.

You guys would make terrible lawyers..."Most Valuable to his Team" is a VERY subjective line and can be defined in so many ways by the observer.

However, we have history to look back and see how the MVP has been awared in the past:

2012: Malkin
2011: Perry
2010: Henrik Sedin
2009: Ovechkin
2008: Ovechkin
2007: Crosby
2006: Thornton

In each season, the trophy has in fact gone to the most outstanding player. And the reason being that most outstanding implies that the player's "replacement value" is higher than anyone else in the league for the duration of the season. The performance only validates that.

The fact that in 12 fewer games, Crosby and Ovechkin have the same number of points is huge. The fact that it took St. Louis/Stamkos more than 3 weeks to catch up speaks volumes. And the fact that Kunitz and Dupuis went from being Top 5 in scoring to being overtaken by like 5 players speaks to how dominant Crosby was.

Jonas Siegel @jonasTSN1050 5m

Kostka suffered a broken bone in one of his fingers and is out. One or both of Jake Gardiner and Ryan O'Byrne will step in.
