Carlson, Martin, Mcdonagh and Suter can all play heavy PK minutes, and unlike Orpik can handle the larger ice surface. I'm also not a proponent of taking a defensive specialist over a two way defenceman who can handle his own end, and move the puck into the offensive end thus spending less time in his own zone.
Your argument is fair, which is why they would use up the other 5 slots with players like that. No way Orpik gets left off IMO. I'd even make a BBKL wager on that.
I don't think there is anyway he makes it, but I'm done making wagers.

MSP4LYFE wroteCOLONI disagree with almost all of this. You omitted Brown and Wheeler in favor of JVR and Abelkader... Dressed Kessel on the third line, relegated Backes to the fourth line when he was an integral part of the US third line in Vancouver, and has only progressed since then. On defense you put Fowler, Johnson and Bogosian over Martin, Yandle, Carlson and Shattenkirk. Gardiner and Faulk don't deserve to be in that top 6/7 yet. I'd also take Schneider and Miller over Howard rather easily.
my thoughts on this thread to an utter T. How Martin, Carlson and Shattenkirk were omitted is nutty to me. I take them eaily over Gardiner, Faulk, Fowler as none of those guys are close to dominant players in the nhl. how will they face against tougher competition in a higher pressure situation? my bet is not well. I'd also have my 7th Dman as Yandle. Any dman leading a team that can't score in points, deserves serious consideration.

Not having Wheeler, a top 30 scorer, or brown on there also amazes me. Brown is a leader and although I am not a fan of Wheeler per say, it is hard to argue his numbers. Especially when he is 1 of only 4 Americans in the top 30 for scoring. I'd take those two over abdelkater and oshie. Don't see how Abdelkater is even legitimately considered. More a Dekeyser invite, because they wanted a bigger list of names lol.

Team USA comes together much easier than Canada imo. The choices are much more obvious.

Kane - Backes - Kessel
Parise - Kesler - Ryan
Oshie - Stepan - Brown
Callahan - Pavelski - Wheeler

Suter - J. Johnson
Byfuglien - Carlson
Orpik - McDonagh

Quick
Howard
Anderson
