Nostalgia vs NOW

Post by kimmer »

Had some cool conversations with some of our resident BBKLers lately and was comparing some of the all time greats vs the greats to be playing right now

BURE (702GP/437G)
VS
OVECHKIN (691GP/428G)

Goal scorers... mean mean streaks speed and those SHOTS...
Bure takes it for me... at this pace, ovi likely beats him comfortably in goals... but I'm just thinking of the possibilities without his knee problem... 2 60 goal seasons + 3 50+ goals as it is. Better and faster skater/breakaway and lets say better +/- for good measure lol

u can also suggest new comparisons after commenting on the current two

Ovechkin.

Also, Ovechkin has the better +/-.

different game... can't compare stats from then and now. Gotta look at peers.

But Bure for me... Ovi's not a winner

I think people forget just how good Pavel Bure was.

Pavel would have made ovy look awful. Watch some high lights and then compare. He was a world class talent

Ovi's 65 goal season he was 13 goals ahead of second.

Bure's two 60 goal seasons: he finished fifth in goal scoring, and he finished first, but there were like 10 guys with 50+ goals.

Bure was my favorite player, but I dont think he was ever in the argument for best player in the league.

Bure was amazing. That was a time when grabbing/hooking was the norm... if the same rules we have now applied then, I'm certain his numbers would be much more inflated.

He is one of the fastest players in the history of the NHL. Imagine people couldn't jump on his back as he dragged them down the ice?

So for the purpose of this discussion, can we agree Ovechkin was more fabulous than Bure? Or is the Nostalgia making us forget just how homosexual the 90s were.
