I'd argue Hunter would have lost a little bit of value rather than gained value.

Agreed. Would have been interested in him as a project, but he's moving down the Canucks depth chart.

Year of development+still very much a very good prospect = False

Have no problem holding on to him. Exploring different options to acquire additional picks in this year's draft.

I agree that he is still a good prospect. Its just getting harder and harder to see where he will get an opportunity in Vancouver, especially with a similar player in Baertschi coming on board and out producing him. Could be years and years in the AHL before he gets an opportunity.

Could be or he could impress in camp or be an injury call up band play well and never look back like any prospect in the minors. A teams organizational depth should not be a detterant for acquiring a really good prospect.

Yea thats fine if thats how you do things. But organizational depth plays a huge role in how I evaluate prospects.

So a high end prospect is suddenly less valuable because he has more competion? How does that make any sense? If you've done your homework and believe he is that good then that prospect will reward your faith regardless. It sounds more like to me you either think he isn't very good or talking a guy down because you want him at a lower price than he is worth.

Basically I approach prospects like investments. There's a few basic questions I first ask myself. One of those questions is like you're outlining, what is the best and worst case scenario for the player in question, what are the likelihood's of those scenarios and where does the the player likely fall on that spectrum.

Now the equally or more important question I ask myself for the purposes of this league are, when can I expect to start to see some kind of return from this investment? Because AHL/Junior play does nothing to help me in this league, and I am conceivably damaging the performance of my roster in some form by making this investment. If there is strong organizational depth, it pushes back the potential return on that investment, so my roster will be worse longer by investing in that player opposed to another one. So I will always have better investments I could make for similar types of players, so the price shouldn't be as high on long-term projects.

Shinkaruk I really wouldn't classify as a project. I could see if you are a team in win now mode looking for immediate return, but if you are building/rebuiding it should really be almost a non factor as the goal is to acquire the most talent you possibly can. And those that are in win now mode rarely if ever would be looking to a prospect for immediate contribution, so again I see that as a non factor. I guess I just see it from a different perspective.

For me its just plain asset management. If I can move assets for something that makes my team better faster I would choose that over the alternative. And wouldn't be willing to pay as high of price, or in this particular scenario a higher price, for a player who appears to have no streamlined return on investment.

Fair enough. There are certainly ideologies in there that I don't really agree with, but what fun would this league be if we all ran our teams the same way?
