CAR/LAK

Post by kimmer »

To CAR:

Jon Merrill
Austin Watson

To LAK:

Zdeno Chara
Kyle Palmieri
2016 Waiver pick (CAR)

Pure cap move.
I also like Watson

1) Merrill and Chara's age difference vs potential production output moving forward is something I've weighed heavily before pulling this trigger. In the end Chara is nearing his 40's and Merrill just started his career

2) Austin Watson - 44 pts/76 AHL GP who is waiver eligible. He will get a roster spot this coming year with NSH and no way he gets waived with his previous year's minor league showing. Big power forward who takes longer to develop in general which you probably know if you are an analytic hockey fan. To me he has Kreider potential so yes this piece is a big gamble. If you and others know and value Palmieri no more as a 3rd liner who is stuck in development, you should know this is worth a gamble in terms of downgrade severity.

3) Put two and two together - Acquiring Dustin Brown and getting generally older in that deal makes this one look pretty decent. Damage control/relief type of deal where I have promising upside in Merrill + Watson. Palmieri most developed and best track record with good cap hit and age at the moment, but I didn't feel safe keeping him

This looks like a pretty biased comment. Chara at 7M is one of the worst pieces to own at this point with his age.

I considered this a buy low on chara. I had 10 mil in cap space and could roll the dice on him. After a long offseason I suspect he'll be 100% and back to normal next year. He's also 37 and not 40 so that's a difference as well.

agree with steve that this is a buy low for chara.. like it for steve but not that it's bad for paul.. paul's team is actually too old and this move makes him younger...
