Basically, does a contract need to be signed before a player is eligible for the waiver draft?
Yes - needs NHL contract (my understanding at least).

Everyone who is not owned by another team. No. Anyone. Including players selected in the entry draft.

No.

Example: Me drafting Mike Reilly last year.

^Reilly is actually the reason I was asking. I was under the impression that a player needed a contract until i saw him. Figured i'd ask.

thanks, Guys.

Found this:

2-6 : NCAA and International FA's can only be claimed via the leagues annual Waiver Draft, you may not claim them through the waiver wire, unless player in question has been signed by an NHL club prior to the start of the season.

So it says, you dont need a contract for the waiver draft, but if you arent selected in the waiver draft, then you will need an nhl contract to be signed.

2-6-1 : NCAA FA's must be signed by an NHL team before the twenty seventh of September and no longer be in NCAA system before claim can be legally made. Sufficient proof will be required.

I think this means that if an NCAA player isnt signed to an NHL contract by the twenty seventh of september, then that player isnt available until the next years entry/waiver draft?

They only need a contract if they are young.

BBKL available and after cut off age? Contract status irrelevant.

BBKL available before cut off age? Need contract to be waiver drafted.

Cant actually remember that off the top of my head. But I'm fairly sure it's in line with entry draft eligibility ending.

That I'm not so sure about.

NCAA players have been claimed when signed after sept 27th. At that point, they just become free agents in our league.

No, you can claim anyone who is draft eligible in the waiver draft. Pretty sure it was Arian that took Vitek Vanacek last year in the waiver draft after he went BBKL undrafted, but drafted in the 2nd round of the NHL draft.

I thought Entry Draft eligible meant Waiver Draft ineligible? Otherwise wouldn't the waiver draft be a way to poach drafted prospects and undermine the purpose of starting our etry draft before the real draft?

Nope. You can draft Connor McDavid if he went undrafted in BBKL but you can't draft Auston Matthews.

In waiver draft terms.

Vanacek had a NHL contract at the time.

"Eligibility
Automatically eligible for the 2014 Waiver draft are ALL bbkl-free players who were:
- born before january 1st 1995, if they played a season in N.A. when 18,19 or 20yrs old
- born before january 1st 1994, if they never played in N.A. when 18,19 or 20yrs old

Additionally, bbkl-free players already signed to a NHL contract are eligible as well, even if born later than that."

Just bump the years up by one for this year.
