League Disparity

Post by Fraser »

Looking to start a discussion around this because to me it seems like a real problem with the league currently.

While it has been obvious for some time that there are a few teams on the top well ahead of the pack in terms of both active rosters and future depth, what has really set some alarm bells off for me as of late is the mentality by most of the people in here. Very few people believe they can legitimately compete, and as a result of this very few people are interested in making moves with a priority of immediate improvements to their roster. To me this is a big problem because in a league where very few members think they can compete in the current year, the interest level goes way down, and we see the long stretches of inactivity that we have been having this season so far.

I think we need to seriously consider making some adjustments and restrictions to filter out some of the insane depth held by the teams on top. Its a tough issue becuase they have spent years building this depth up though great team managment, but the fact of the matter is it is a result of taking advantage of years of incompetence of weaker GM's. Now I think the league is at a point where the majority are quite knowledgeable, but the interest level just isn't where it could be, and I attribute that to the belief that there is only a few teams who actually have a legitimate shot at winning this year.

Now I'm not claiming to have all the answers here, but what I thought we could discuss would be maximum GP for skaters in the minors per year. I think this would help force the hand of some of the deeper rosters to filter the NHL talent around the league, while still leaving the age and GP for waiver eligibility in tact. Just an idea, and id be interested in hearing other suggestions. Or if you guys think I'm out to lunch here, but I think we could do better than what we are doing now.

I would have never thought of max # of nhl games in the minors as a solution, but i believe that is a great idea/solution.

We are only 20 games into the NHL season, and there is one team with 168 NHL games played in their minors. (nearly 700 gp projected over a season) While I commend that teams impressive team building skills, that is a little ridiculous in a league where gp minimums need to be hit.

And it isnt just about minimum gp either, its about having more teams be able to carry star players. Some GMs have nearly a playoff team in their minor league. That is one more competitor.

Well thats just it. I just think that when we have a league that has teams that can afford to have multiple young stars sitting in the minor leagues we have a problem from a competitiveness standpoint.

We could force teams to leave 1 or 2 active players unprotected each off season for the waiver draft but other than that I suggest to keep trading I was a bottom feeding team last year and now am in a playoff position.

Dunno if it is just about being a bottom feeding team. teams can get better. we arent saying that they cannot. however, if 4 teams have 3 stars in their minor leagues each, that takes away one or two contenders from the top, creating less competitiveness.

Also I should clarify that what I'm suggesting doesn't necessarily hurt the wealth of these teams on top. Rather I just think from a competitive standpoint in the league we shouldn't have a structure that allows a large amount of productive players to sit in the minors contributing nothing

This problem ia far less of a problem now than it was 2 years ago. This summer teams like mine, Boston, minny and even toronto had to lose a few deals to cut a ton of cap.

The flip side of this. You're always going to have guys that have no idea how to put together a fantasy team. So in the offseason we'll have to gift them players only to watch that GM shit that gift away.

This problem doesn't exist to the extent it did years ago. It also promotes tanking because it means that you grt a top pick from the draft plus a good player from a contender.

When you have incompetent GM's like Kimberly and I, the problem will always exist.

I definetely don't think any consideration should be given to handing out players for free. What I'm suggesting is a adding a pressure to deal productive NHLers who aren't cracking your lineup or bench for picks and prospects so there is more competition throughout the league.

Simple solution to players stashed in minors: don't offer anything good so they have to sell a guy or two for peanuts or waive them.

I'm with Steve. I dunno - looking at how fraser's, will's, Scott's, Billy and Matty's teams have improved in a year or under a year I think is tremendous. Remember this is a full 30 team league. We have way more trades than the actual NHL. I think if you stay patient (like lee and Matt bruyns) and really focus on building you're gonna rise to the top. As much as I wish I had Mike or mik's depth, it would be unfair to really make a change that only penalizes a few teams.

Steve is right. Hong, Mik, Steve and Mike all had to make some deals that really lost value on just to maintain cap compliance. It'll even out in 2 years if we keep the consistent group of educated GM's here.

Bottom line - patience!

I think GP maximums for players in the minors is the right idea.

Ya, i'm ok with rules to prevent minor hoarding. I'm not okay in giving players away for free

Yeah, when I agreed with Frasier, it wasn't to give players away for free. It was strictly to add a rule like he suggested to prevent minor hoarding and put pressure on said teams to m , few trades to upgrade their roster and get more nhlers on the actual rosters. Which is why I think a max nhl minor league games of like 400 woul be appropriate. It still allows guys to develop their minors, but it means they won't have 20 full time nhl'ers (an entire team) in the minors.

That being said, if all the current rebuilders continue to rebuild the eventual players in minors per team should flatten out a bit across the league.
