League Disparity
Re: League Disparity
Re: League Disparity
So then whats the point in having waiver exemption then? Like Mike said earlier, there will always be teams sitting below the bar - whatever it may be. Teams who draft well ie Mik deserve the right to have these players in the minors if they so decide to. In another league i have 12 defenseman, 5 in the minors/bench. 7 or 8 of which are waiver exempt. In that league teams are crying for starting Dmen but no one offers anything of value to warrant me to trade those players.
Re: League Disparity
Our waiver rules are still very, very lax. Each new full time player has years of waiver exemptness due to the 120 GP rule since we calculate at the beginning of the season. Let's saying player x breaks onto the scene this year, plays 20 games and destroys the league. they have another 2 full seasons of exemptness.
Re: League Disparity
our waiver rules have never been this tight, and I suspect we have a lot of players eligible for waivers that are waiver exempt in the NHL.
Without ever changing the rule we apparently even took away waiver exemption for those just drafted in the waiver draft, which is stupid/unrealistic cause when a NHL team sign a free agent out of Europe who has never player in the NHL obviously they have the chance/likelyhood of sending him down (Kemppainen for example had to beat the odds to stay up since he was a waiver exempt newcomer and the easy guy to send down. Yet, if a guy like him starts in AHL like normal, we still have to keep him up right after drafting him in the waiver draft not to lose him for free).

Re: League Disparity
Honestly I would only restrict waiver eligible players to those on an ELC regardless of Age
Would make Top picks worth more ( so they should)

Some good points being made in here. Find the ELC suggestion interesting.
Re: League Disparity
my team was another one to add to the list and as the ongoing Kling/Panarin/Kuz situation testifies, it goes even beyond the off-season.The BBKL Insider wroteCOLONThis problem ia far less of a problem now than it was 2 years ago. This summer teams like mine, Boston, minny and even toronto had to lose a few deals to cut a ton of cap.
and yes, when I joined the league (which had started less than one year before) the situation was much worse than now, and that's when you had top teams already loaded, full of gifts received from friend GMs, brothers, incompetent GMs...The BBKL Insider wroteCOLON This problem doesn't exist to the extent it did years ago.
95% of my assets come from my drafting or from trades that were either almost ignored (ekholm, klingberg etc) or commented in a negative way, considered the loser of the deal by the league big fishes / majority (Malkin, Kuznetsov, Vatanen.. ), and was built over a 5yrs span, not in 8 months.
the level of activity was higher when there was way worse disparity than now (and the average level of GMs' competence was certainly lower than now). The reasons for lesser activity imho rely elsewhere: daily fantasy surge (draftkings and such), GMs being involved in money leagues, GMs getting older hence busier with real life, league it's not a new toy anymore, etc...Fraser wroteCOLONTo me this is a big problem because in a league where very few members think they can compete in the current year, the interest level goes way down, and we see the long stretches of inactivity that we have been having this season so far.
As Bruyns mentioned, some of our most active GMs are running franchises that are currently bottom teams.
If the level of interest of a GM who is part of BBKL is dictated by his current chances to win I think he is in the wrong league.
You should be in this league if you enjoy being a GM in a more similar way to NHL GMs.. which among other things (depth, etc) means longer terms to change things in comparison with standard leagues.
That doesn't mean we can't further improve.
(See my next post when it comes, if I manage to put it together before having to leave)
Re: League Disparity
Mik I think your far and away the best GM in this league when it comes to scouting and finding diamonds in the rough, and I have no doubts that is why your depth is as extensive as it is. I just don't want to see star players not being utilized in our league, its not good for the team who has them or league wide competition. I'm sure you want those players on your roster as well, for me it comes down to trying to create more motivation to make deals happen quicker to accommodate that.

Re: League Disparity
Good on Billy...I like the ELC idea. We can stop worrying about tracking the age and GP of the players. I guess age would still matter if we were still able to slide contracts. We just need to know their cap hit and if they are on their ELC or not.

Re: League Disparity
With the ELC, would there not be a ton of extra players who become waiver exempt? The waiver wire would be ridiculous, no? I like what we have going on currently... would be for continuing to slowly drop the GP max in the minors to 100GP for next year... or even 80, but I don't think I'd do the ELC... that's 3 years for every new player - not enough.
Will take a few more years still for the so-called "raping and pillaging" by top, long-standing GM's to filter through the league. Teams, rightfully so, will pay less for older, expensive, top end talent (i.e. pleks) when the top teams try to open up space because they know they are against it. Not really concerned at all.
Anyone have numbers on how many GPs were in the minors for teams last year?

Re: League Disparity
Some of you guys sound like a bunch of whiners. Who cares if Mik has a ton of high end NHLers in the minors? Why should he be penalized for being a smart GM and accruing a ridiculous amount of NHL talent? If you don't like it, draft better and manage your assets better rather than complaining about it.

If we're going to change the rules again...let's find something that works and stick with it.

People coul still keep plenty of waiver exempt player player the minors. Just not 15. They could trade 6 of those players for anothe form of value to get some of those players into activity. 6 players is 1/3 of a bbkl roster. It Is significant.
