I was just thinking of a shake up, don't think there're many wingers (or players in general) of greater impact and reliability than Patty Kane. Been PPG+ every year, every playoffs since 2012-2013.

I agree about offence, but it's the 10.5M contract that makes me think Backstrom is more valuable. If they were one or two mil apart even instead of four I'd think it's fair value.

He did lead the entire league by 17 points during one of the lowest scoring periods in recent history. That's huge.

The only real hiccup in your theory though is that scoring stats count the same in the standings as other stats. That's the system we have where bad fringe NHL players put up stats that make them valuable.

Offence does start to get underrated since many stats are all related when it comes to offence and I'm guilty of preferring a player that puts up good hits or SHTOI more than a player who puts up offence but doesn't hit, block, PK or take penalties. I have no offence only players who put up no periphs other than maybe Fabbri and Strome but Fabbri hits a little and the book is still out on Strome if he puts up any periphs.

It does start to become underrated at some point, but there are definitely guys on the other side of the fence that still overrate it. There is enough evidence around to support that.
