Depends on the situation too, for me if I expect to lose Andersen I can leave really valuable players unprotected. I can only lose one player so if I lose Andersen then who cares how amazing my other unprotected guys are since they won't be taken or one does and I keep my goalies. Some teams might not have a lot of motivation to worry about trading good players for futures knowing they can only lose one guy.

i see it similar to matt. I'm still going to have really good players available for an expansion team. I just didn't want to lose a franchise player. I doubt i protect Tanev, so i suspect i'll lose him next year. At least i gained Pulock + 1st in the process.
