He's shown he can consistently put up 40 points, and has put up 33 points over the last 2 playoff years. They probably see him as a very solid support piece to lock up until his early thirties. AAV is solid, and while the term is long, getting most of their team locked up could mean consistently making deep playoff runs.

Good player but there's Hedman's contract kicking in next year, Drouin and Palat up for a raise next year, and Kucherov needing a new deal. They have a couple of bad contracts they should move but who knows if they'll be able to and at what price. I guess moving from Bishop to Vasilevskiy helps their cap situation.
