Pretty good flip for Engelland. Periph monster this season but at the end of his contract this year and he's 34.

well, after this deal it seems safe to say each of Folin and Wiercioch are easily worth a 1st rounder #GenoDeal

Paying a 1st round pick, it's meant to be a longer term investment. Those 1st round picks are expected to be guys on your roster for a long time. We see trades where a veteran gets flipped for a 2nd, a 3rd or even a 4th round pick. But those are players have less upside and have more of a short term impact.

Young(er) players and mid-round picks are probably the going rate for a veteran journeyman defenseman or forward. You see a 1st round price for elite talents and players will have more of a long term impact. Malkin at 30 years old is still worth a 1st round value but maybe when he's 33 or 34, the price goes down because there's a fewer quality years remaining his career. You probably don't give up a lottery pick for a guy you might only get one or two good years from them.

With a guy like Engelland, he's probably a better player now at his "advanced age" because he's good fit for a specific role on a team. Defensemen that hang around into their 30s are usually good in a defense-first or offense-first role. You know who these guys are at this point in their career. They're safe and reliable.

it's not like their numbers are that far apart now, hard to think they'll in the near future... and chances are Folin and WIercioch will be having their best yrs when Engelland will be already retired (or out of the league anyway)

10 years of folin numbers are worth more than 2 years of engylland

The numbers are not even close...

10 years vs 2, assuming Wiercioch and Folin both last that long in the league

I'm sure Nick wasn't going for a long-term solution and preferred the short term numbers anyways

Smith is better than Folin or Wiercioch and likely has more years left... however better player now, in our league big time, is without a doubt Deryk. Don't get that for free.

By the same logic I assume Mik and Matthew would be willing to trade any active veteran player for a rookie NHLer....presumably the rookie has more years left in the league than the vet.

Josh, I'm assuming folin will put up close to engylland numbers once he develops. You're presuming my logic and are wrong.

lol Engelland had yet to play an NHL game when he was the age of Wiercioch (and even more so of Folin), and if I take the best I've seen Wierioch play on a single day it's already better than the level Engelland could ever play at

Yep, England took a long road to the show and doesn't play a puck possession role. He grinds it and sucks to play against, holds opposing players to account.
