Why would you care about how many actual dollars ownership will be paying him in year 3? Cap hit is still awful in year 3 at a time when they need those cap dollars to give more important players new contracts. And the cherry on top was giving Marleau a full NMC.

Agreed.

I agree moves are coming, and the only way this deal makes a lick of sense is with other moves. The issue with JVR/Bozak/Marner last year was they were a disaster in their own end. Putting a guy like Marleau on that line helps defensively and it allows the Leafs to package JVR, Carrick and their 1st Rounder for a top 4 dman. Problem is, there isn't much available at all, and I don't think that package gets it done.
