That depends on the GP pieces you are offering. Most of the time when a GP piece is being offered, they want the moon and the starts for that player because the selling GM knows you have to acquire the GP pieces to meet the minimum or be punished. In the NHL, a Kari Lehtonen does not get a 1st round pick, and a David Booth does not get a 3rd round pick. When there is a huge discrepancy in price/value, it tells you that something needs to be changed.
It's an interesting scenario for the rebuilding teams. In one case, I was offered a d-man who could potentially play 20-30 games next year... but my team already has too many of those what if types, so to me that player has little value. I'd rather a draft pick or a prospect instead.
I’ve been in your positions and pretty much any GP you are offered under 30, if the price is fair, I’d take it with an aging roster bc not a lot of guys will be looking to do anyone favors here
The point being that nobody should HAVE to do anyone any favours. There is not enough NHL/GP talent to give everyone a full farm team and a full NHL team so that we don't have to worry about GP as a rebuilding team. Not right away anyways. I should be able to trade a Chris Kunitz for a few mid-round picks instead of being forced to keep him to bring my GP min up.
I was ready to trade Muzzin to a couple of teams, but was told I couldn't because I would be tempting the CC to remove my GP free pass. That situation hurts TWO teams.
When you have teams like the Kings and the Preds who have 6-7 regular NHL players not even in their starting lineup, the quantity of players available is SLIM. There just aren't enough players to go around.

Yes it was that way when i started as well. That’s part of what I’m saying and it’s not gonna change anytime soon

At the same time why is it that you get to set the price and decide that that is what fair value in the league? We're not the NHL so the values aren't going to be the exact same... since we don't control roster call ups/downs then the price of GP to get that security will be higher than it is in the NHL
I think the point trying to be made is WHY is the league forcing rebuilding teams to spend valuable assets on worthless players just to attain some GP standard? The more assets rebuilding teams have, the quicker they SHOULD be able to get back to contending. Forcing teams to waste assets on what most of the time amounts to JUNK only contributes to the rich getting richer.

I tried to get Austin Watson off of you and it was going to take half of my prospect pool/young NHLers, maybe its a case of the rebuilding teams not being willing to take the time to build and wanting to become a contender over night? Steve and Mik's teams were build over years and years of good trading/drafting/ having a farm system in CAR (jk Paul), you can't expect to not take the risk of making a bad trade here and there and expect all of your draft picks to pan out, or expect to fix a team by making three trades.

You wanted a young established player in Watson and offered old man Enstrom and crap. I countered with Enstrom and 2-3 younger players that MAY become NHL'ers one day, but are currently AHL tweeners. If those three tweeners are half your prospect pool, then I feel really bad for you.
I can't speak for the rest of the bottom dwellers, but this team has ZERO chance of becoming competitive in the next couple of years. Like you said, it's going to take time. But having to give away prospects and draft picks for old players is not a cost any rebuilding team should have to pay. It's counter productive because those costs are likely not recoverable down the line b/c they are now ''too old''.

You are looking at this the wrong way. 850 gp is a minimum standard of competitiveness set for each and every gm contenders and rebuilders alike, so that teams can't completely tear their roster down to nothing. What you think of the prices of players don't matter. You got a free pass this season, but just like everyone else starting next season you are obligated to reach that minimum standard. The standard is set so low that literally nobody should miss anyway. You can literally dress 2/3 of an NHL lineup and still make that without a problem. Nobody is asking you to trade your future away to reach that minimum. It's simply a matter of making a few smart trades.

I'm not saying that I would strip my roster down to a minimum... because there is still the cap floor to be reached. That alone requires a good amount of players and trades to accomplish. I am arguing mostly against San Jose's complaining and wanting to be compensated fairly.
What may come of as complaining, is simple arguing to get to the bottom of a rule that to me is brand new, and doesn't make much sense. There are many ways to move around the GP factor without awarding compensatory picks to another GM or mandating that teams go out and trade assets for useless NHL'ers. If the league could find alternatives, I think it would make things a lot less messy. Of course I base my opinion on all of my 2 months experience here. I am sure most of you have blocked or simply ignored my posts by now anyways .

I'm arguing simply for what is written in the rules to be upheld, nothing more. From what I'm currently told I'll get mine, and you get your pass, so we're both OK.
