Detroit Trading Block: 2018 Offseason

Post by Shoalzie »

I'm still looking to compete for a playoff spot in '18-19. I want to buy this offseason but I realize I don't have a lot of "disposable income" but I do have some roster flexibility. I might have to settle for upgrading. I'm around $17 million under the cap with a complete lineup. I'm over 90 players but I have several candidates to be dropped.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

= = = = =

Offseason Shopping List:

1. Middle of the lineup center: I need FOW primarily. I don't necessarily need an offensive or defensive player. I'd just like find a center than is steady at getting faceoffs. I'm sitting at just 3 centers and Nugent-Hopkins could find himself a lot of the time on McDavid's wing.

2. Upgraded backup goalie (1A goalie): I'm not a huge fan of Elliott as my starter so I wouldn't be against picking up a second goalie that can chip in with some starts and won't kill me week-to-week. I don't look at Lack as viable #2 goalie.

3. Secondary scoring winger: It's just a fancy way of saying I'd like find another 20-goal scorer on the wing.

Bernier is the type of goalie I'm looking for. A goalie who can get around 30 starts would be great.

If anyone wants to make a bold deal...I'll listen any offers involving Kyle Connor where I'm receiving a center. I'd prefer to not trade him but if I can get a really good center in a deal, I might change my mind.

He's a veteran winger that puts up points. I've already got a fairly similar guy on my roster in Vanek. This wouldn't be my first choice to be completely honest. I do have a credible offer I'm mulling over for Connor.

I don't think paying for a player that could only marginally help him before retiring while he is clearly not contending makes sense

P.S. in Williams' case "over 30" means 37 by the start of the upcoming season..

A. He was the 4th most valuable asset in the deal
B. He could have 4 more years left in him for all we know
C. He is more than a marginal upgrade over Aberg/Bourque
D. He could potentially flip him to another team

I remember when I joined and teams made trades to make them better and now it seems like the culture is you are either a top 5 team and all in or all your trades should be based on sacrificing the present for the future. Not an attack on you Mik and Scott says he had an offer he prefers anyways just took offence to a question of why a team would want a 50+pt top 6 W like they have no value.

Veteran players that produce get a bad wrap around here because most teams want to have younger rosters. 50 points from a 36 year old count the same as a 22 year old but it's the long-term value of the veteran player that makes them not as attractive in the trade market. It's risky to invest in players in their 30s because your window to compete with them is shorter than if you have roster of all in their early to mid-20s. Bottom line, we can't have 31 teams all having rosters of players in their early 20s...there's only so many of those guys to go around.

For sure and that's why the value is adjusted accordingly, no chance you get a 40+pt 22 year for a 2nd.

I didn’t say he has no value, just that it makes no sense for a team in Scott’s position to spend anything on a 37yrs old.

B. He could play several more seasons just like he could hang ‘em up at the end of next season, for all we know.
C. I wouldn’t swap Aberg for Williams if my team was DET (nor being NSH, but for different reasons)
D. We know how 37yrs old are valued in this league.. he would only gain from that if Williams was almost a throw in, not if he is given 2nd round value

Got some things cooking but I need to coordinate my deals so none of the assets involved are in conflict. I could have deals involving a center, winger and a goalie going down soon. I could do some reshuffling on my defense as well. I've got one team I really want to hear back from before the dominoes start to fall. If you haven't chimed in yet on a possible deal...do it soon.

I still have around $15 million under the cap and only gave up NHLers and picks. I still have the few decent prospects that I owned before.

The center position has been addressed...adding two instead of one just because the deals made sense to me. Nugent-Hopkins likely moving to the wing is a suitable replace for Connor.

Added a goalie...never a fan of having spend good assets on a goalie but hopefully I'm settled at the position for a little while.

I'm still looking for a decent goal scorer on the wing.

Wouldn't mind adding a veteran defenseman. I don't want to shy away from older players if they're still productive.
