It's all about how a team uses the player. If you're playing 20+ minutes a night on defense, you're probably valuable to your respective team. My argument goes out the window when a guy like Nick Jensen is playing 20+ minutes a night in Detroit but their defense is in shambles. He's more of a "getting a lot of playing time given the circumstances" guy. If your regular top 6 is healthy, you take the top 2 or 3 guys in ice time and those are usually the most valuable defensemen to their given team.

To me, Vatanen is the #1 defenseman in Jersey...Severson is in the top 3 in minutes making him an important guy.
