BBKL Draft Timing
BBKL Draft Timing
Hey everyone,
I'm curious how many people here think that having our draft before the NHL's has negatively impacted their prospect pool? I personally am pretty okay with the first 3 rounds, but it gets sketchy after that.
What was the reason we decided to do the draft prior to the NHL's, and is there an appetite to start ours afterwards at this point? If we wanted to move towards the ''teams automatically get the goalies assigned to their system rule'' moving to after the NHL draft could add an added level of intrigue if a team gets lucky and gets a couple of free high draft picks. Maybe if prompts them to make a trade instead of drafting?
A conversation for a quiet league. Let's talk!

Re: BBKL Draft Timing
Anyone can take a player drafted in the 6th round of the NHL in the 6th round of the BBKL draft. Having it before means GMs actually have to research players and make their own choices which I personally believe adds to the entertainment. You see guys taken in our third round go undrafted and guys taken in our 6th round go in the NHL's 2nd. It adds a layer of unpredictability and intrigue rather than just looking at who are the highest drafted players still available. Sure it has negatively impacted GMs who draft undrafted players in the last rounds (myself included) but it has also positively impacted GMs when they get a perceived steal based on draft position.
I've done drafts both ways and find doing it before is a lot more enjoyable. There could be an appetite for change, but BBKL draft is usually one of the better times of the year and if we were taking players already drafted it takes away the big risers and fallers and a lot of GMs will just go on auto pilot and put no thought into their selections.

Why would we want to ruin my favorite time of the year in this league? Having the draft after the fact would take a lot of the fun out of the draft.

And your response does not answer a single talking point. I'm not lobbying for one vs the other - just gathering more information on the league and how things came to be.Matthew wroteCOLONThis sounds like "let's dumb everything down" to me.Da_Hawks wroteCOLONHey everyone,

Re: BBKL Draft Timing
Mark, you're definitely not the first person to bring this up but it's been long established that we do our entire draft ahead of the NHL draft. There's not much skill in just looking at the draft results and picking a name off that list.
We had it at one point where it would start before the NHL draft but the end would overlap into the real draft. It would allow teams with late round picks to just draft someone who was actually drafted into the NHL. That really affected the value of 6th and 7th round picks since teams would be making selections after knowing the draft results.
Part of the challenge is identifying talent and even if they don't get drafted initially, you hang onto them and sometimes they arrive later. (See Artemi Panarin originially drafted by Mik).
We fail with most of our draft picks...it's just how it goes. Make sure you do some research and if you don't...then get rid of your picks.
The positive thing is there's several prospects from last year's draft that weren't taken that you could take in this draft. If you're not sure of a player at certain spot, you can find a drafted player who is unowned. We all miss on picks but usually they're the later round picks and the odds of finding an NHLer is a long shot anyway.

Re: BBKL Draft Timing
The goalie system is an interesting idea but it doesn't apply to everyone because we don't all carry the complete systems of teams. Plus, they change every year.
Do your research and hopefully the players you pick are taken in the real draft and develop into pros.

Re: BBKL Draft Timing
All the research people do into prospects and potential sleepers goes out the window if we know where they were actually drafted. Doing it before allows people who put in the time to add value by drafting a guy in the 4th who actually went in the 2nd. Some of that is luck, but some of it can be attributed to doing your homework.
If we're trying to simulate a real be a gm feel, doing it before the NHL draft makes that more authentic. You act as a scout and make all the calls based on research you did.

Re: BBKL Draft Timing
Fixed, we all pretty much go off of a variety of lists and rankings and write ups on player. I could say I scouted Colts games when I drafted Tucker last year, but that would be a lie. Last Colts game I saw Ekblad was a 16 year old.Malette18 wroteCOLONAll the research people do into prospects and potential sleepers goes out the window if we know where they were actually drafted. Re: BBKL Draft Timing
Just meant it as, you look up articles/rankings to weigh against central scouting as a baseline. Those who simply follow CS wouldn't care if we drafted pre or post NHL draft, as they would just take highest ranked/drafted available. Those who put some effort in are trying to find the over/under valued by general consensus.Bruyns wroteCOLONFixed, we all pretty much go off of a variety of lists and rankings and write ups on player. Re: BBKL Draft Timing
i love that we draft before the NHL, makes us obsess over shit, the whole spirit of BBKL is to be as close to an NHL GM as possible - many leagues have cap and all this - drafting pre-NHL is a separating factor
Re: BBKL Draft Timing
Drafting before the NHL draft is great.
Sometimes you draft people way too early (Teemu Pulkkinen at the end of the 1st).
Otherwise you get a steal late (no example off hand).

Interesting feedback - there is certainly a bunch of brave souls amongst you all. Though so far, the (not so vocal) less active GMs have not chimed in yet.
Curious what everyone's position is! Like I said, I'm good either way. I've another league that drafts afterwards, so it's nice to have something different.
Shoalzie, you said that it's long been established that it's done before the NHL draft. Did the league start this way, or did it convert later?

Re: BBKL Draft Timing
It's been that way since I've been here and I've been around since either the first or second year.
It took getting well-schooled in who are the top prospects. This league has done wonders for me in getting know the prospect pools of teams and getting interested in draft prospects outside the lottery.
Honestly, this is a fun way to do it. More difficult? Of course but the challenge is the fun part.
It stings when a 4th round pick goes undrafted but as I said, they could be drafted a year later or they can sign as a free agent down the line. Good thing about 90 player rosters is you can stash away some projects. I've got several college players that weren't drafted but hopefully a few will sign NHL deals eventually.

Re: BBKL Draft Timing
No, we're not going to change at this stage. Our drafts would've gone a lot of different if we did. To know who drafted someone and when...it changes the outlook of a player dramatically.

He doesn't, but I think it's pretty.much a given that not many if any would be in favor of moving the draft til after the NHL draft. Especially from guys that have been here a while.Da_Hawks wroteCOLONThen why has there been other people putting forth their opinion after his?
