I've not watched the Leafs enough to see who are Babs "pet players" but he definitely rode his pet players that he had in Detroit. He obviously loved Hank, Pavel and Kronwall but those were his leaders. I don't know who he identifies as his true leaders in Toronto. He definitely never had young talent to the level of Marner or Matthews in Detroit. Most of his best players were veteran or at least well into their late 20s. He's very stubborn in that he will rely on his trusty veterans. He loved a guy like Dan Cleary in Detroit...I don't know who the equivalent that is in Toronto. He always nagging about not having a right-shot defenseman back to his Detroit days. His best defensemen in Detroit were left-shot...Lidstrom and Kronwall. I think Rafalski was there during Babcock's time and the Wings never replaced him until they signed Green.
