Playoff Format Poll

Post by dave1959 »

This is to get an idea of what you all think, not necessarily the final decision. We decided to post this now as activity is high during the draft.

CC may have further discussion once the poll closes.

So much for division rivalries :-/

BBKL existed before the wild cards were introduced and regular seasons were the same.

I would also argue the exact opposite, regular seasons have been boring the last couple seasons since playoff matchups were pretty much set in stone with over a month to go. 1-8 means seeding is up in the air for a longer period of time in theory. I also don't have regular season rivalries with teams in my division, but maybe a lot of others do.

I'm for 1-8 once we make the playoffs. But I'm also for top 3 in each division making the playoffs. I think that adds an element to our league without removing another fun element. Given the poll results, I'm guessing I'm alone in that idea.

Ya my only issue for that is giving teams preferential playoff spots based on division. I want the 8 best teams in regardless of what division they're in. It is unlikely but I dont want to see the 9th team in a conference get in because their division is garbage.

Then why even bother with conferences? It's more likely a team is going to get in unwarranted cross-conference than cross-divisional as there are no overall league wildcards.

But then again, I don't mind a weaker team getting in once in a while, due to divisions of different strengths. Then you see different teams trying different things. For example, the metro gets teams with short rebuilds because they have a chance to get a playoff spot each year, whereas in my own division that is quite strong (the Pacific) I'm in a long rebuild so that one day I can catch Steve.

If a slightly weaker team gets in in the 8th spot I don't care - as that person strategized based upon their division, especially if we give top of each division the 1-2 seeds come playoffs time. In option 2 you need to pay attention to division in the regular season and conference seeding for the playoffs. Two things for the price of 1! :D

Mirror the NHL which was the basis to this league when we first started it.

This is my mentality as well. Wouldn't like to see us move away from trying to emulate the NHL.

If we are bashing the NHL, then I vote to eliminate the draft lottery while we are at it. In this league it takes skill to finish last and keep your 1st round pick. That should be rewarded with the 1st pick.
