Even if he calls it a career after next season, that's still a solid move.
And if you're safe with GP next year and he's on a cheap deal and he's mildly productive, you can potentially flip him at the deadline and make a little profit.
Win win.

When I was at the bottom of the league, my trick with GP is always bank as many games you can earlier in the season so you're not scrambling and potentially overpaying at the deadline.
When the last few weeks of the season roll around and you're going to reach the number safely, then you can be a seller and move a couple veterans out for futures.
If you can get more of your young guys cracking NHL lineups next season, you'll be in great shape.
