2020 Draft Discussion

Here's the real irony: the NHL primarily did the draft lottery tonight so that the non play-in teams could have something to talk about, generate some buzz in those markets. The only buzz generated tonight was in the play-in markets, and it's the wrong kind of buzz.

My money is on the draft lotto being re-jigged for next year.

Nah. The normal NHL format (outside of covid year) works pretty well.

The lotto format would not be any different in a non-covid year aside from there requiring a 2nd draw. Having someone 12th last draft the best prospect is ridiculous.

I mean the result is basically just one of the lowest chance teams winning the lottery which could happen any year, the only real X factor is that because of their play-in format there are teams which would have easily made the playoffs bundled with teams that would have easily missed the playoffs in contention for that spot

There shouldn't be rewards for blatantly losing. The Wings were awful this year but it shouldn't mean there's a guaranteed pot of gold at the end. The lottery system has incentives but nothing is a sure thing.

It's not like the last place team gets nothing if they don't win the lottery. 4th is still a very good player.

2013 had 3 good forwards and a good dman considered in the top 4.

1st place team falls to 4th? You still get Seth Jones.

This year has Laf, Byfield, Stutzle and jamie Drysdale. We shall see how it all works out. Exciting!

so the countodown didn't reveal the team but that guy saved the day. Hilarious sequence there with the guy struggling to get the "team E" message across his mask to Bettman, and the latter eventually saying it's team B who won the lottery

The thing I don't understand is how they do these videos for transparency when the list that matches number combinations with NHL teams is not available (is it anywhere?). Without such list we have to trust that single guy, picking the right row and not doing any magic for a particular team (or the NHL itself), so the video per se is useless (other than this year for our purposes).

Imagine if Montreal wins Lafreniere, 80% of fans will claim it's rigged lol.

Although, with the season not being over Taylor Hall is not an UFA yet so Arizona should win it, I should have thought about that!

4 titles since '97 and 6 trips to the finals since '95...nobody has screwed them. I don't know where the tinfoil Wings fan have crawled out from but I hope they go back to their bunkers and stay there. I hate my fan base more than any other.

Every franchise has a decline after their linchpin players leave or retire. Zetterberg "retiring" was the official end of this era. Holland kept kicking the can down the road instead of rebuilding. Kyle Quincey for essentially Vasilevskiy? Holland screwed the Wings more than a commissioner could.

Besides, the Wings got fat on the cap-free era and Mr. I spent freely and they got their titles. Holland was a mediocre GM for this cap era so Yzerman's job has been to clean up his mess. Lafreniere would've helped but what needs to happen is Yzerman needs to find players with the 3 picks in the 2nd and 2 more in the 3rd round. This is an important draft following an awful season. Maybe they luck out next year and get Aatu Raty.

Would be stupid if a few of these teams managed to win it, but definitely a bit weird no matter what given there aren't many truly terrible teams here. Most cases Lafreniere is stepping into okay situations.
