Hopefully getz has a bounce back year, but seems fair-ish.

Doesn't seem like a very good return for Malkin.

Even worse aging center, player who will retire after this year and a mid first for an over ppg player.

If the Wings held their own 1st, this would make sense. I'm not seeing the big picture in Detroit.

I'm definitely hanging onto my 1st and this other 1st for 2022. Having two 1sts in what could be a good draft gives me some flexibility. I haven't been a player early in a draft in several years.

With a flat cap, I knew my options were small but I worked out a deal I'm satisfied with. What I'm hoping for is Getzlaf plays beyond this contract and if he's on a cheaper deal next year, he could be flipped. He's a more complete center compared to Malkin so I lose some offense but I should be fine in the other categories.

Malkin has two years left on his deal and I'm more cynical that he plays in the NHL beyond this deal than I am of Getzlaf. He's still very productive but he misses plenty of games and he's aging out. If was a team like Colorado, he's the type of player I'd want to help me contend.

I debated trading over him this year because with this short season and the fact I do want to compete. If my team can get off to a hot start...it's a sprint to the finish line if I'm able to hang in the playoff chase. If this season is a bust, I might sell a few guys and look towards 2022 as a transitional season. Hence, I have those two 1st round picks.

I wouldn’t be too worried about missing a 2021 1st. Seems like a weird crop

Yeah, that's kinda why I wasn't against moving my 2021 1st last year. I fancy 2022 over 2021.

Agree... not sure why the move needed to be now? Would have wanted to target a top end prospect over this lot.

Malkin wasn't fetching a top end prospect. Anyone that would've had interest in Malkin is against the cap and I don't see anyone in this league trading a legitimate blue chip prospect for Malkin. That said, I think some of you guys are being a bit short sighted here. Getzlaf might be a bit washed, but he is still a pretty good h2h piece while not necessarily being worth his contract. For a team like Scott's that should be in full rebuild mode he doesn't really lose anything going from Malkin to Getzlaf in both the short and long term. He was also short on NHL defenders. Getzlaf and Russell on cheaper deals next off-season will make for tradable assets for Scott to deal for additional futures where he might not have been able to find a deal like that with Malkin at his cap hit.

From my perspective the deal is obvious. I was one of the top periph teams in the league last year, but aside from goals, sog, and gwg I was lagging behind some of the other top teams in the league. I have plenty of players that give me what Getzlaf provided my roster. Malkin will hopefully help me in some categories that I was sorely lacking in when facing some of the top teams in the league, but it's also not without risk trading a 1st round pick banking on a 34 year old player to continue being a ppg+ player that has had some injury concerns. It's a calculated risk on my part and at a price that doesn't break the bank obviously. Ultimately this deal may look a lot differently a year from now.

This isn't exactly a league that covets players over-30...even if they're still quite productive. The other tricky part of trading older players is the elevated salary while not being at their peak playing years. Would it make sense to keep him and play him until the wheels fall off? I don't have enough assets to aggressively spend to insulate that kind of investment so this was a move to slightly downgrade at the position, add a player at a position of need and add a good future piece.

He and I definitely talked about his top prospects and frankly I'm happier getting this pick in the deal. A known prospect versus a high pick is simply buying the extra years of development. Until we get to 2022, it's hard to gauge what that pick is actually worth. As I said, 2022 is a draft I want to play an active role in.

Agree with what both Scott and Casper are saying in this thread. Saw the email for the completed trade and thought it was good Scott got a few assets for Malkin. I dont think there was a big market for him since I know how difficult moving older high paid players can be.

My first thought was to trade him next summer but honestly this flat cap is going to hang around for a couple years and with Malkin another year older...there's a chance I don't get the same return.

Getzlaf is on an expiring deal so I'm hoping he makes less money on the next contract and he can be flipped or I hang onto him and use the cap savings elsewhere.

I do think the short season could really benefit veteran players...less training camp, no exhibition, reduced travel and fewer games. And with an expansion team coming in next year...there's plenty of opportunity for guys to prolong their career.
