Detroit Trading Block: 2020 Offseason

Post by Shoalzie »

Let's start my offseason trade activity with some intrigue...I'm open to hearing offers on Evgeni Malkin.

I'll see where any talks go involving him before I address other needs with my team. My initial thought was trade Malkin next offseason but why not see what I could get for him now?

I have an idea what I'd trade him for but I'd like to see what the market is for him. If only one team wants him and doesn't offer my ideal return, I won't move him. I'm leaning 70-30 towards keeping him but I figure let's explore this option first.

Fire away!

My waiver pick that is on the clock is being shopped if someone can meet the asking price.

I'm looking for either a 2nd round pick or two 3rd round picks. I'll leave it available for a little while this afternoon.

I have a player I prefer here but I want to see if anyone wants to buy it off me.

I'll make my pick at the top of the hour if no offers come in.

Now that Vatanen is signed, I've got a complete lineup that I'm comfortable starting the season with. I'm looking at roughly $10 million in cap room. I'm not actively shopping anyone but if someone is tight with the cap and has a creative trade idea, you know how to reach me.

If my team looks like it won't be in playoff contention this season, I may move out a few select veterans before the end of the season or ultimately in the summer.

I hold two 1st round picks next season but I'm not treating 2021-22 as the start of a proper rebuild. I look at it as the first year of putting a greater emphasis on drafting. I want to rebuild/refill my prospect pool while still carrying a decent roster of NHLers. Maybe I won't be a playoff contender but if I ended up in the lottery, I'd hang onto my 1st round pick and use it to my advantage. I want to build up a sizeable prospect pool that I can use to pull players from when there's a need on my roster rather than spending assets in the trade market. I trust my ability to find players in the draft so picking high or low, I just want opportunities to find more players that could be NHLers in the future. I have no designs on finishing high or low in the standings going forward...I'll let that happen organically.
