Reasonable. Would have preferred one better prospect I think.
Re: LAK - SEA
Steve literally turns Simmonds into Murphy. I'd call that a solid cycle.
Re: LAK - SEA
Ya he traded Simmonds for Beckman back in March and turned him into a top pair D.DApolloS wroteCOLONWait, really?

Nice BBKL piece if he stays healthy… but top pair dman?Bruyns wroteCOLONYa he traded Simmonds for Beckman back in March and turned him into a top pair D.DApolloS wroteCOLONWait, really?
Re: LAK - SEA
Easily, 22min a game playing on Hawks top pair and 30th ranked Bbkl D is definitely top pair. I think this was cheap, but Beckman could be good and Murphy is a contender piece so helps Steve a lot more than David.Handsome&FairMike wroteCOLONNice BBKL piece if he stays healthy… but top pair dman?Bruyns wroteCOLONYa he traded Simmonds for Beckman back in March and turned him into a top pair D.DApolloS wroteCOLONWait, really?

BBKL top pair...in the NHL he may be a top pairing on Chicago, but have u seen their defense? It's kind of gross at the moment.Bruyns wroteCOLONEasily, 22min a game playing on Hawks top pair and 30th ranked Bbkl D is definitely top pair. My point exactly. He was used cause they didn’t have other options. Who knows what happens going forward but suspect he’ll be only on decline going forward.Matthew wroteCOLONBBKL top pair...in the NHL he may be a top pairing on Chicago, but have u seen their defense? Re: LAK - SEA
I would agree with both Matt and Mike. He's only top pair because the hawks have a thin defense. That said, the hawks really liked his game and from what I can tell, they plan to keep him on the top unit.
The one part I disagree with is the decline. It's possible, but he's 28 and that's when you usually see the best from a dman.
I guess time will tell.

Re: LAK - SEA
How can one decline when you are already terrible? That said, if Murphy resigns with Chicago for a reasonable cap hit, then it's a win for Steve. Murphy should be able to continue to be bad and put up useful bbkl stats.

Re: LAK - SEA
Ya I meant decline stats wise. Not sure you’ll get any more offense out of him and don’t think he’ll ever have as much of an opportunity to play to rack up the periphs. All in all, makes sense for both sides but still probably like it for Steve. The BBKL Insider wroteCOLONI would agree with both Matt and Mike. He's only top pair because the hawks have a thin defense. Re: LAK - SEA
I should have said top pair BBKL D. Even though he plays top pair right now in CHI I was talking BBKL value. Being a top pair D in the NHL doesn't automatically equate to top pair in BBKL.
Being 3rd in blocks, 22nd in hits and 27th in SHTOI as a dman is extremely valuable IMO, those are the three stats I like my Dmen to contribute and he is elite in them and depending on his UFA deal which I would guess is <5M he is on a reasonable contract for top pair BBKL production.
I probably should have tried to acquire him he fits perfectly on my team, but between cap space and not having Beckman type prospects not much I could do.

Re: LAK - SEA
Worrying about who is a "top pairing defenseman" is just a superficial term. You want a guy that can hit categories.
Do they just block shots and hit?
Do they chip in offensively?
Do they play special teams?
You can have a defenseman playing under 20 minutes but they can be solid across multiple categories. A lot of player's value is dependent on what team they're on and how the coach uses them.

Re: LAK - SEA
That was the point I was making, when I say top pair D I mean in BBKL not NHL. I consider players like Dillon, Sergachev, Gudas, Barrie, Martinez top pair D even though they aren't on their NHL team. They are all ranked in the top 35 so pretty comfortably top pair when there should be 60ish in BBKL. Players like Slavin, OEL, Hughes, Fowler, Dahlin are top pair NHL D but I wouldn't consider them that in BBKL.Shoalzie wroteCOLONWorrying about who is a "top pairing defenseman" is just superficial term. Obviously I am not saying Gudas or Dillon should be worth Hughes or Dahlin since they are still young and will contribute for longer, but once they start making big bucks it's hard to say they are better when looking at bang for your buck. Separating NHL value from BBKL value is something I see a lot of GMs struggle with.
