Re: It's Time
For context...here's been Billy's track record with these deals:
He did trade away and later re-acquire his 2018 1st. Got a nice player in Evan Bouchard who looks like he's ready to be important piece of Oilers defense. A player he's since traded, re-acquired and traded again.
2019 1st: Acquired Steve Mason and a 3rd...his pick ended up being 2nd overall: Nashville selects Kappo Kakko
2020 1st: Acquired Josh Anderson...his pick ended being up being 5th overall: Nashville selects Marco Rossi
2021 1st: Acquired Lars Eller, J.T. Compher, Patric Hornqvist and a 3rd...his pick ended up being 10th overall: Columbus selects Kent Johnson
2022 1st: Acquired Taylor Hall, Matt Benning, Dylan Sikura and Joseph Blandisi...his pick ended up being 15th overall: Detroit selects Rutger McGroarty
2023 1st: Acquired Nazem Kadri
It's kind of impressive that Billy has gotten a pretty good return while at the same time his pick his moved down the order. Kadri for his 2023 1st is looking like a very nice investment if you're lead to believe that's a middle of the round pick next spring. If you're going to move your 1st, you want to hope you're either not giving up a potential lottery pick or you're a legitimate playoff team. It's interesting to look at what could've been done if you kept the picks versus what was acquired. If he can again acquire another useful veteran for his group and he's either flirting with a spot or makes the playoff...he definitely seems more justified in making these moves while he remains a competitive team.

What's closest example to a Tim Duncan in the NHL? A decent team that ends up in the lottery and the player hits early on and helps them ascend.
