Hickey was a top 5 pick due to his offensive ability, and Voinov was always a top 10 talent, the Russian factor hurt him though, I think it is a stretch to call Deslauriers as talented as Hickey or Voinov.

DD and JJ both do that job well. Martinez certainly stepped in with ease and had the AHL # to go with it (#1 in scoring by dman at time of being called up)

Jack Johnson isn't a prototypical puck mover either, he's more of a puck rusher/two way defenceman. Johnson is clearly better than anyone on the farm, Hickey included, but the two can co-exist on the same blue-line, IMO.

Martinez doesn't even belong in the same conversation. For starters Martinez is 24, secondly he has only had one really good offensive season in his career, and that came last season in 20 games...

The thing that gives Hickey an edge over: Voinov, Martinez, and Deslauriers is his ability to play both ends of the rink, something the latter have much to learn moving forward. It is also important to note that Hickey essentially lost an entire season of development due to injury, and an additional half season to get back on track; I am more than comfortable taking the risk on a good defensive prospect like Hickey. Worst case scenario Hickey is traded and gets a shot on a different team.

That is the only time in Martinez's career he put up numbers even remotely resembling ppg, and it was in a small sample size, I tend to put more stock into the rest of his career, and two AHL seasons prior. It also bears noting that Martinez's 15 points came in 60 games, hardly an impressive feat, minimal role or not...

Hickey was a ppg player in his first 7 AHL games, it means nothing, not unlike his recent point totals due to injury, Hickey missed an entire year due to a leg laceration. Last season was essentially Hickey's first pro season, and even still he is only 22; the same age Martinez was when he played his first full AHL season. As I stated above, there is no comparison.

Hickey put up 24 in his first full pro season, at a younger age, after coming off (nearly) an entire season of inactivity due to injury, and yet you are impressed by Martinez's 23 in his first full season, and unimpressed with Hickey? Interesting, and by interesting I mean stupid.

As I stated above, Alec Martinez 16 points in 20 games was by far the best stint of his career, and you have yet to disprove that fact. No, 30 points in 55 games, is not comparable.

I don't like Alec Martinez because he is a shit player, not because he played in the NCAA, it took Martinez 3 seasons to pass 30 points, in the CCHA. Thomas Hickey is a superior player.There is a reason Martinez was passed over in the draft twice, and a reason Hickey wen't 4th overall, while Martinez went 95th (in the same draft). The fact that you disagree is laughable, it's doubtful he even keeps his roster spot over Voinov this season, but hey at least you have a ppg season in the AHL to look forward too.

Kareem one of the two guys I called comparable (that we're talking about) got the call up after 2 very strong ahl stints- and played especially well when given power play duties. Draft position really doesn't matter 4 years later - especially when one appears to have got his spot (to lose or w/e). 5 goals as a bottom pairing dman is rather good, and he's not an offense first dman. Still the same 13min toi in the playoffs as well.

Unless... Maybe your suggesting I should plan for Scott glennie or Nico Sacchetti to take Jamie benn's spot.

But seriously. Drafted out of southern California can account for some of the draft position difference. Hickey was a money CHLer for another big gap. Hickey was better earlier. But alex was a ccha allstar and NCAA 2nd all-American, not exactly a scrub that you're painting. and like you've mentioned several times, dominated the ahl right before his latest callup.

It does when one player was passed over twice, and the other was a top 5 pick. Four years really isn't a large enough sample size to count out Hickey, especially when one considers his missed year of development.

Hickey was better earlier, and at the same stage of development is better, Hickey is just flat out a better player, with a significantly higher ceiling to boot. NCAA awards mean nothing to me, look at the list of past winners, to say there are a ton of scrubs would be an understatement.

Hickey is a lock to play in the AHL for all or most of next season, so the best bet would be Hickey's AHL ppg as a 23 year old vs. Martinez's ppg as a 23 year old in the AHL.
