The most I'd go with Kovy is 5 years for 40 mill. That's 8 mill per year.

I'm really hoping though that Kovy decides to just sign for 1 year and give it another shot next year when teams arnt so fucked by the cap.

I didn't say that, don't act like I did; however I don't believe he'll get it either, if he's even asking it.

Best player I've ever seen hit UFA, to ignore the opportunity he represents is insanity.

I believe Nash & Staal got ~8M contracts, and he has been more consistent for longer...and UFA.

Obviously Burke has expressed interest, but I don't blame him for turning down interest in Kovy for that price, which was the basis for my entire argument...

He is 27 years old, I wouldn't give him more than 5/6 years max.

Kovalchuk is a selfish ass that is more out of place in his own end than burke in a gay bar. One way player that is concerned with himself, dynamic goal scorer no doubt imo best pure scorer in the league right now. That being said a shitty character guy who wont even put a stick in the lane for 9 mill no thanks! That is why 28 other teams are not interest!

Agreed. For 8 million I will ignore the defensive issues, not 9 million, and certainly not 10 million with term!

Burke isn't out of place in a gay bar, he's even said he's made a specific effort to expand his own comfort zone and learn more about that life-style.

so perhaps kovy is no where near as bad defensively as your making sound ;)

maybe a bad example but I stand by my last statement. not worth 9 someone will pay tho and get a dynamic player. to njd he might be worth it because they have a team of hard working 2 way players. So taking on the most selfish player in hockey (he and semin imo) might not hurt them lol

well, another player has stepped up:
According to NHL Insider Darren Dreger, there are rumblings that the club may make a lucrative, long term contract offer to forward Ilya Kovalchuk. One such source says that an offer could be in the 10-year, $100 million range.

Late on Friday, Islanders general manager Garth Snow confirmed to ESPN via a text message that the club was involved in talking to Kovalchuk.

NYI isn't that different from what he left in atlanta, except they have fans and a few more up & coming players...

Report: Leafs Sign John Mitchell
Friday, 02.07.2010 / 10:53 PM / News
According to several reports, the Maple Leafs have re-signed forward John Mitchell to a one-year contract.

The 25 year-old have six goals and 17 assists in 60 games last season.
Damn. didn't think he was coming back... here's to hoping its cheap and that he had a sit down with the big B about what is needed out of him. I know he's young, reasonably sized, and fast... but fuck if he continues to try and dangle...

Current lineup:

Kulemin -Grabo - Kessel
Kadri - Bozak - Vertseeg
Sjostrom - Hanson - Armstrong
Orr - Mitchell - Brown

I like Mitchell more on the wing, and Sjostrom would be of more value to us if he could take a draw....swapping them would be an improvement if possible...No effect on accounting for our glaring lack of a #1 C, or a top 6 above 6'1".
