Petri Kontiola has been placed on waivers by the Leafs with the intention of terminating his contract.
He will reportedly head back to the KHL once the transaction is completed. Kontiola didn't earn an NHL roster spot with Toronto out of training camp and he didn't earn a point in 11 minor-league games with the Marlies.

1) Canada
2) USA
3) Russia
4) Sweden
5) Finland
6) Czech
7) Best Euro players remaining (for example Kopitar, Hiller, Vanek, ect.)
8) North American players under 23 (RNH, Hall, Huberdeau, ect.)
This is terrible news, would probably make it be nothing more than exhibition games, both in perceptions and efforts from the players, at least a part of them.
Imagine how much Kopitar, Vanek&c would care about their games when they are not playing for their nations.. we already have an allstar game and it's bad enough

Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
The waiver draft is an absolute crap shoot...becoming less and less attractive to hold that top spot because you actually have to make a choice. I traded out of that top spot because I'd rather just take best guy remaining out of my top 5 or 10 guys. Let the guys in front of me thin the herd. Mike took Steven Oleksy the year before #1 overall and he's not even in the league anymore.
Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
Unfortunate pick on Oleksy, but that's inherently a gamble with those kinda guys. Huge BBKL stats but marginal actual NHL talent. Knew what I was getting into..Shoalzie wroteCOLONThe waiver draft is an absolute crap shoot...becoming less and less attractive to hold that top spot because you actually have to make a choice. I put zero research into my #1 pick and got what I deserved.

Yeah, they are considering forgoing the Olympics for this joke of a tournament? This just sounds like a bigger version of the Spengler Cup.

Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
you guys all assume the players wouldn't take it seriously.
Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
The problem is I won't take it seriously. The extra "assorted" team mean they are playing for themselves rather than their own country. The great thing about the olympics or an all country tournament is the country on country rivalries they create. Canada vs "random assortment of leftovers" in the finals just doesnt have the same ring to it.Nick wroteCOLONyou guys all assume the players wouldn't take it seriously.

Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
Just dont do anymore international play fuck it... If they aren't doing Olympics anymore no point. IIHF doesn't deserve to make money with this shit they pulled with the Olympics
Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
what shit did they pull?
Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
just being cheap as fuck motherfuckers refusing to put in funding to contribute to players insurance coverage because IOC won't (and they shouldn't... because IIHF controls all things international level hockey and individual event olympic athletes are obviously covered under whatever indepedant facility controlled policy they have for their players)
