uh, i feel like there's ways to show faith in a player without giving them a 7 year contract after their rookie year - like offering them a contract, of any length, in the first place.

there's only about 25 players in the entire NHL with contracts longer than 7 years and their names are weber, parise, suter, ovechkin, crosby, malkin etc.

how many times have we seen rookies shine, ESPECIALLY defensemen, and then subsequently fade and settle in as average or slightly above average players? it happens a lot. the term of this deal is foolish no matter how you slice it.

Ya, 7 years is ridiculous. Give him a fair 2 year deal to prove he's worth the long-term investment. You bridge players who weren't highly touted elite prospects from the start to be safe.
