YeahI think Hamilton is closer to a guy like Brodin than someone like Hedman, definitely an awesome player, especially considering age, but not quite a top tier player yet, and whether he can or will take that next step remains to be seen.

Neely was blindsided by Hamilton’s intentions. Neely said he didn’t know why Hamilton would want to leave.
“I really didn’t get any indications of anything negative in exit meetings,” Neely said. “So I was surprised. I thought Don did some really good work on comps around the league. He put a lot of time and effort into making fair offers and showing them we were serious about trying to sign him. We didn’t want him to get to July 1.”
The Bruins submitted offers of four-, five-, and six-year terms to Hamilton last week. All were competitive with the six-year, $34.5 million extension Hamilton signed with the Flames on Tuesday, said Neely. J.P. Barry, Hamilton’s agent, did not return any counteroffers.
In the face of the no-no-no answers, the Bruins quickly found themselves in a jam. The draft was approaching. So was free agency, and with it the threat of losing Hamilton. While he wouldn’t have done it right away, former GM Peter Chiarelli, now in Edmonton, would have signed Hamilton to an offer sheet.
The Bruins could have held their ground. They could have continued to negotiate. One-way conversations in June usually transform into working dialogue in September, when bargaining power shifts to clubs and unsigned players start itching to join their teammates at the rink. The Bruins could have matched any offer sheet.
Fear won out.

For the remaining Bruins, like Brad Marchand, it has been a bit gut-wrenching. He watched a good friend leave Boston and couldn’t help but wonder if he was next.
“I think that day (Friday) was just a big shock with those guys leaving. I don’t know if guys were prepared for that to be happening,” Marchand said last night before an appearance at McBlarney’s County Tap. “There’s always speculation about guys getting traded, but there was obviously a lot more happening this year. You do get a little bit nervous, but I hope I’m here for a long time and if not, then it’s out of my hands. But it’s always a tough spot to be in when guys are getting traded and the team is changing around you and you’re losing friends and close teammates. It just means that new relationships have to be built and I think we’re all looking forward to that.”
The trusted left winger of the Bruins’ best overall player, Patrice Bergeron, Marchand should be safe for a while. But, then again, it was hard to imagine the team without Lucic not too long ago.
“Obviously, we all know that with the season last year there were going to be some changes but it’s always tough when you see your friends go to another team,” Marchand said. “Looch has been around for a long time and we’ve built a pretty good relationship so it’s always tough to see a guy like that go. On the other side, we know it’s a business and decisions have to be made at times that aren’t always easy. All we can do is wish him the best and hope he doesn’t run us next year.”

Link, Steve junior?
It was interpreted wrong by my source. One of the guys on TSN Free Agent Frenzy suggested it as a possible scenario after the trade was official. Probably nothing.

Also from the article
" The Bruins had no wish to wait. They wanted 2015 picks, either high enough to draft Noah Hanifin, Ivan Provorov, or Zach Werenski, or attractive enough to bundle with other assets to land in the top 10."
They failed at this and having no wish to wait ended up being a poor decision since it was reported there were teams that would have offered more. From Mirtle of the Globe and Mail "Some teams didn't even seem aware Hamilton was being aggressively shopped today. Bruins auction process for a player this good was flawed." I read the same sentiment elsewhere that teams were surprised at the return. Couple this with the fact they turned down a superior offer from the Oilers and it becomes clear they did not do a good job at maximizing the return for their asset and instead acted hastily and desperately to quickly add '15 picks to move up and when that didn't come to fruition they made picks that were reaches by consensus.
Obviously Boston media is going to try and spin it like moving Hamilton was the right decision and unfortunately had to be done, but not shopping him extensively and settling quickly did not have to happen.

I'm a bit confused by the Edmonton offer reports.....Edmonton offered a better package for Hamilton, but they were also going to offersheet him? Something doesn't add up there.

The trade offer was slightly higher draft picks and he likely would have been offer sheeted if they didn't take a trade offer. Same thing as Leafs did with Kessel back in the day, we reaquired our draft pick we needed to make an offer sheet and told Boston either you trade him or we will sign him to an offer sheet.

But why make an offer of higher draft picks if you know you can offer sheet him for less and land him? Was Chirelli doing the Bruins a favor?

You make the offer of higher picks since he can trade him to any of the 28 other teams before you get a chance to offer sheet him. Rumours were teams other than CLB were looking at signing Saad so CHI took the best trade offer they could get. Oilers offered more than offer sheet compensation for this same reason.

Hamilton?????
The words franchise d-man must mean quite a few different things to you than me.
Hamilton may not be a franchise d-man yet, but who on this list was a franchise d-man at 21? not many. The point is that he is one of only a few young nhl d-men that have a really good chance of becoming a franchise d-man in the future. He seems to be one of a few who are more easily projectable. Basically the bruins only added 2 2nds and lost 4 years of development on their original 1st rounder on him. There is absolutely no way this trade is defendable, imo. I absolutely believe he could have gotten significantly more for Hamilton. Hell, I would pay more for lots of players not on that list too. You don't need to be a franchise d-man to get more than they received for Hamilton. Especially a 21 yr old Hamilton.

Lupul should be productive IF healthy this season which I like for my BBKL team.
Marincin is probably on the team too. At least they have hope on the way in Nylander, Marner, Kapanen, Leipsic, Brown, Johnson, Gauthier, Verhaeghe, Leivo, Bracco, Percy, Harrington, Valiev, Dermott etc. Won't all make it, but definitely the most potential NHL prospects I can remember having as a Leafs fan. Stamkos signing with us should help too

likeable deal for WSH.
Meanwhile, Saarijarvi already signed by DET, I guess he will go CHL instead of playing for Karpat under his recently signed 2yrs deal contract. Not exactly a fan. Maybe 1yr in CHL and the next one in Liiga?

I watched a dozen or so marlies games last year and imo percy is the most NHL ready but Loov was by far the most dominant dmen. When he bulks up another 10lbs he has a pretty high ceiling.
