I'll speak from experience but you can't chase GP later in the season and not expect to give up less than a 3rd round pick. And you can't keep every prospect under glass...again, I speak from experience. (See John Mitchell for Nick Schmaltz + Mark McNeill) You've got to do what you've got to do.
You're only going to get a part-timer or a guy on a 1-year contract or nearing retirement if all you're only willing to part with is a mid-round pick. With so many players hurt right now, I don't know many teams here who want to part with NHLers right now.
I've got 7 NHLers currently on IR...I wouldn't dare part with a player when I'm just as concerned about GP. This is also why it's so important to bank as much GP early in the season as you can because injuries will happen.
