It's actually not even a bad trade. The problem is that there's no direction. These firsts will be flipped for a player with less value than Spezza for sure. I'm just looking at the grand scheme of things rather than the parts.

To be fair, if this had been spezza for one 8th-10th overall pick I'd probably think it was a good trade for Paul. If this ends up being 2 18th overall picks it's pretty decent.

Bingo. This is the actual point.

1st CAR + Crouse + Backes gets traded for RyJo (okay as a standalone trade though Paul lost big on the cycle as expected)
But now Spezza gets moved for 2 later 1sts?

Either use the picks and beef up or move the players and get picks/futures. Does anyone expect Paul to win this cycle? My bet is the 1sts here will be added to his other roster players for upgrades.
