The only rational explanation I can think of, and it is not that rational, is that the Rangers plan on making a big move for Richards, and so rather than burn a year on Kreider's contract (since he would be unable to get a mid season call up for cap reasons), they are sending him back one more year with the intent of signing him in 2012 once Drury's cap is off the books.

They met with him after the season exrpessing their interest in him signing -> Torts addressed it as well. He stepped back with his family, coach and advisors.... decided to return... this is a weird one IMO.

To be fair it's not unheard of. Burke offered Frattin a contract last year. IIRC JJ and Wheeler also chose for more NCAA time at the displeasure of their teams.

he likely went back the same reason Justin Schultz returned..
Loyalty to his team, and desire to win a championship at this level, and closer to gaining his degree.

He has a NCAA championship as well as WJC gold, kinda seems like he needs the next step of opposition, meaning some AHL time...perhaps another championship... but who knows, maybe an urge to be ready to jump directly to the show after next season?
