I'm up against the roster limit as it is with 4 late round picks...I don't have the room to take on more. I'm going to take my chances with the few picks I have and we'll see if any of them work out. I would've liked to get back in the draft earlier but I think I maybe find some nice value later on and take a flier on some guys at the end and see if one works out. I'm getting to the point where I'll cut bait with some of my guys if something doesn't happen with them soon. I'm in a mode of refreshing the talent pool...skimming off some of the scum.

I know once i was hit with all my injuries last year i really regretted trading Shawn Thornton to LA for a 5th rounder. I also traded Shane Hnidy for a 4th and Skrastins for a 4th. Worst deals i have ever made. Actual NHL rostermen for 4th round picks...ugg...Stuff like this should bring people back down to earth that the Entry draft is a crap shoot at best. I way overpaid for the 7th overall pick but i had the assets and had to cut salary. A full time 4th line player in the NHL should really almost be worth a lot more than a 4th round pick. I remember i made a trade with Florida for Chuck Kobasew and everyone slammed him. He gave me a first round pick and a prospect. It was a fair value trade for both, yet he got slammed for a giving up a first. Didn't make sense. I think some people understand the "true" value of draft picks and others just aren't quite there. When you have people turning down offers for the 9th and 10th (as example) overall for players with say 60-70 points on more than one occasion you really have to think about that. That is freaking nuts...ah well. I am only one guy trying to run my team. ? I cannot and will not speak for anyone else. For people coming in to the league taking over from brutal GMS that made early mistakes it really does suck and i commend your efforts and ongoing work!

so many people just eat the media crap about 100% rebuild through draft, don't see the 8+ years it takes and the ungodly low % of actual turnout.

There is so much movement in our league that to say you need to draft to rebuild is insanity. make some trades, make some calls on players who are improving, sell guys before they crash...

Instead of bitching about the way the league is set-up put some work in bettering your own roster! I know it takes patience, and probably a little luck, and you were given a crap deck to start with, but your not alone in that, and it would be a solid showcase of your fantasy GMing skills to turn that group around -> you have some sick prospects, as well as some guys that are wastes of a good stick and a pair of skates.

However my comment was more directed at actual NHL.... but if you'll also note that NHL teams, even when rebuilding, don't stock-pile late round picks, they keep a constant flow in the pipeline.

Mik, we are moving towards the 80 player limit, however given the # of assets that are circulation so far in the league, the pressure it adds to a few GM's who've failed to plan for the limit is not worth adding extra spots that are of no importance to the league. Some decisions are good ones, and personally I believe this limit has saved a few teams from being ruined more then they already have been, quanitity is rarely the better choice, especially when you only need 19 decent players.

I'm done commenting on the matter. No free agency until a method is proposed that improves more then it fucks up, we'll continue to add additional roster spots each year until we're at the NHL limit.

I just joined another league at the end of the season and they're doing a free agent auction where everyone has a budget to spend on free agents. It's open bids for UFAs and closed bids for RFAs. The auctions are done 8 players at a time and they run for 3 or 4 days. There's options to match or take compensation for the highest bid on RFAs. The UFAs go to the highest bidder in those open auctions. The open auctions also have a 24-hour clock where if no new bids come in after 24 hours, the high bid gets the player prior to the deadline. It's a pretty solid method. The only strange thing with this league is that players become free agents the year an old contract expires even if they sign an extension. Which means that guys like Keith or Toews or Backstrom or Marleau or name another big name guy that was due to be a free agent this year and signed a new deal before July 1 still goes into the pot.

Honestly, I don't think we can do it any other way than with an auction and with 30 of us here, that could be chaos. To me, the idea of having to move a guy if his contract is too much of a bump that you can't fit him under the cap causes enough turnover. With each new guy that signs, it could lead to a potential trade if the guy is overpaid and his current team can't keep him or if he's a bargain, maybe you trade him for value or keep him. The league would have to decide on a FAAB (free agent auction budget) and then decide if it carries over from year to year and if you want to put in rewards to winning divisions or playoff rounds or championships where you can earn more FAAB money. I'm in a few baseball leagues that has FAAB involved where you have submit a bid if you want to add a guy off waivers or free agency...minimum bid is usually $1. FAAB money can be exchanged in trades as well.

We use real contracts, not changing that, if you want a league that does that go start a new one (not directed at you shoalzie).

That's a situation where it takes away more then it adds, and changes what we started, which is not a problem.
