And that move with Michael Stone is super fishy for me... but it obviously must be allowed.

It's legit. I saw it mentioned on Twitter that there's a certain kind of buyout or method that allows a team to sign the player back. I can't remember who said it. The main reason they signed him back was because of Valimaki's injury. I don't think this was in their original plans.
