I don't think a different option as his 6th or 7th forward would've meant Mike Reilly wasn't going to be drafted anyway. Nobody would've taken Wallmark if he was left unprotected.

Yeah I noted this in another thread. Wallmark is only 25 and had previously played very well in Carolina. Given my lack of C depth, I had to protect him.

Interesting...Nugent-Hopkins signed an 8-year deal with the Oilers at a fairly reasonable number (a little over $5 million AAV). A very Ken Holland move to give him 8 years but he's going to be digestible through most of that deal. It's rare that you'd see a guy take less AAV as a pending UFA to stay with their current team.

Also notable...Wayne Simmonds got 2 years with the Leafs. I assume they'll expose him in the draft so he fits the contract requirement.

Given the cap hit, he can be sent down to the Marlies without any penalties. I wonder if the Leafs are going to employ their own little taxi squad and tacked on the extra year to ensure nobody claims him when they move him up and down the system.

I'm more shocked that they actually gave it to Fox in his 1st real dominant season. Normally a guy has to get snubbed once or twice for a guy with a lengthier reputation of greatness before they actually win.
