34 didn't play last night but 8-1 is still 8-1.

A lot has been sorted already but this will still be an intriguing close to the regular season. Can Dallas hang onto that last spot in the West? Dallas losing keeps Vegas in the mix but Vancouver dropped an important game in Minnesota. The Kings get another important win. Some teams who are in are still jockeying for position and home ice.

If Florida wins the Presidents Trophy...how big of a factor will home ice mean to them? They've been laying waste to everyone lately.

Did the hockey gods just give Yzerman a gift? Who are the Islanders going to get who is a better coach than Barry Trotz? Trotz is not going to be unemployed for very long.

Funny thing with Trotz dismissal...I forgot Lane Lambert has been his assistant for a long time. Lambert's name was brought up immediately for Detroit after Blashill was announced he wasn't returning...connections with Yzerman. Would Lambert tag along to Detroit or is he finally going to get his own head coaching job?

Also funny...Lou is 79?!?

Nice deal for barabanov
2y x 2.5M

That could be super good if he improves on this year's point totals

Bryan Rust re-signs for 6 years x 5.

I don't think it's too bad. Comps would be Zach Hyman, Blake Coleman, Jaden Schwartz, Kyle Palmieri, Brandon Saad...signing at 28/29/30 for around 5 or 6 years in the $5-5.5 million range.

When it comes to a 6-year deal I feel like 28 is quite different from 30

The way players are paid over the course of their career is backwards. If a guy goes into the league any between 18 and 21 years old...their best years in the NHL are the years before the player even reaches UFA status. In most cases, the next contract is compensation for out-performing their previous deal. Rust's last contract was definitely a value to the Penguins and they got his best production.

Giving a 30 year old a 6-year deal is far from a guarantee but I think a lot of his value is contingent on how the Pens fill out their roster. There's a lot of unsigned players to figure out. Rust is a good complimentary player...he's not being paid like he's a star. I'd put him in the "steady reliable veteran" category.

well should have been 2 minutes each (embellishment for the Finn) in OT, but yeah, the real bad call was the highsticking penalty. Unfortunate.

I just hope the day we are finally given another legit best-on-best tournament it won't be ruined by these ugly low camera shots
