How much more would it have cost the Sabres to actually wait to see if he can actually follow up his 38-goal and 68-point season?
Good on him for having a strong season but this is risky for the Sabres to sign him before you see his follow up season. Granted, Okposo's money is off the books after this year...somebody on that team needs to make money I suppose. Skinner got $9 million from the old GM but he at least has some seasons of production under his belt.
Not my team, not my money...
problem is if he followed up with a better season (which majority thinks he will because of his work ethic and his size and natural talents), and with better teammates, he would be paid similar to thomas or norris's money.. i thought he's getting 6x6 but i think it's a bet that with the cap going up the value will be much better going forward.. at the end of the contract he's only 31 too.

Handsome&FairMike wroteCOLONWill be interesting to see what happens in VGK net. Is Thompson still eligible for the minors? Impending move of brossoit? Having 3 goalies around is the worst.
Thompson is W exempt, but I also think Brossoit may be injured still?

Yeah I think the expectation is the Brossoit starts the year on the IR.

Nice contract for Oettinger. Still only 23 so he can really get a big contract after 2025 with the way he's progressing.
Pretty good names still to be signed in the RFA crop but the marquee name remaining is Jason Robertson. Considering Oettinger got a short deal...maybe he gets a similar deal to someone like DeBrincat...3 years for $6.4 million AAV. The Stars don't have enough cap room for Robertson to get a Tage Thompson-like deal but he'd be worth it.

Between oettinger, Dobson, Malkin etc Casper is getting really lucky with these cap hits. He could have very easily had another 10ish extra cap he would have to deal if some of his guys took less team friendly deals this off season

JT Miller extends with Vancouver for 7 years x 8 Million
He was really good last season, and the deal is probably fair, but as a Canuck fan I hope this doesnt come with a no trade clause. I would have preferred they dealt him and just let this team really fail, as I dont believe they have the pieces to compete, but if there were no fair offers, this is better than letting him walk next off season.

JT Miller’s new 7-year, $56M extension with VAN includes a full NMC, with a limited NTC in the last 3 years of the deal.

It's interesting with Kyrou and Thomas' new deals kicking next year just as Tarasenko and O'Reilly's current deals wrap up. They'll have several guys to address next summer with about $15 million under the cap to work with.

Nice little signing yesterday for the Avalanche getting Rodrigues on a 1-year deal. He seems to fit the profile of their bottom six.

I think at this stage what's happened is that the players from that World Juniors team who are on NHL contracts have mostly had their agents release statements that they weren't involved or have said so themselves, Batherson and Formenton I believe are the only two who haven't done so, so there's speculation that they probably were involved in some way.
