Nope, legit thought he meant Klingberg since of course EK is better than Ekholm, but the cap hit means that was near impossible to pull off.

Don't love the trade for Edmonton, but seems like the type of player they were looking for.

getting the puck to McDavid instead of turning it over on the breakout is the first thing they should be worried about.

Not saying they shouldn't have done something else either: given how expensive Ekholm turned out to be they could have gone after EK, Parayko, Lafferty & Korpisalo (to replace Skinner)

uh? they got Ekholm at 6M cap hit.
They could have got EK at 2.9M cap hit...

How are they getting him for 2.9? All the double retentions were on expiring contracts. You really think SJ is taking on 5.75M of dead cap for four years and another team is taking on 2.9M for four years? It cost the Leafs a 1st to get rid of one year of Marleau at 6.25 and Sens a 2nd and 4th for one year of Zaitsev at 4.25 I think. I can only imagine the price tag for 4 years of retention.

ARZ would be glad to take those 2.9M lol, and SJ should get all they can for EK while they can

Four years out is the problem, I don't think either team is planning to be bad in four years even though they likely will.

It would be like a 1st + 2nd + 3rd to ARZ for this year and another 11.6M in dead cap over four years and that's probably not even enough

Then what are you paying SJ for 23M in dead cap and EK? I don't think EDM even has the assets to consider this a realistic possibility. The AAV makes Karlsson's contract untradeable this year IMO.

I'm noticing a few 2023-24 entry level contracts today, here's why:

https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2018/03 ... endar.html

It does make sense that we're getting into the college/junior/Euro free agent signing period. The Red Wings signed free agent Alexandre Doucet from Halifax.

College hockey is entering conference tournament time so there will be teams whose season will end very soon. Also worth noting from yesterday, the Ducks traded the rights to Harvard's Henry Thrun who will likely become a free agent in the summer. I think Erik Portillo, the Sabres' prospect and Michigan goalie will test free agency rather than sign with Buffalo. I figure he gets moved at some point.

The amount it would cost edmonton paying out to have karlsson retained they could just pay for a great player making way less lol.

Larkin re-signs...$8.7 million AAV over 8 years. It seems like they reached a compromise and it's good that it's resolved and out of the way.

I doubt that.

Also, I assume it would have been possible to have the Sharks retaining just 1.5M (if that was the problem) and 50% of the remaining 10M by ARZ to have EK at a lower cap hit than Ekholm..

I don't see the compromise, SteveY somehow won the negotiation once again

Larkin wanted $9 million and I was under the impression Yzerman was around $8 million. They met in the middle and it seems a bit closer to Larkin's price.

I don't care either way...I love seeing a picture of Yzerman at Larkin's house with him signing the deal. It's a bright spot after 3 straight losses and getting trounced in Ottawa.

wow, 10 million contract despite Edvinsson & Wallinder coming up next as LHD
Hronek out and off to Vancouver, now I can understand it better although I see only LHDs aside from Seider
