agreed. and in Bill's position I wouldn't want a "sympathy" asset. i'd take it on the chin and move on.

it's not like it is a big surprise though.. i know, he had one more lucrative yr on his contract and was supposed to play it out, but he also was a 38yrs old playing on a bad knee for a while.. so it was surprising seeing Bill trade Streit for a probable year of Rafalski and a project prospect. :?

Kyuss your undervaluing Shehan in that comment... kid was playing an important role on a very strong NCAA team IN HIS DRAFT YEAR, that is very rare. Red Wings going after a forward in the 1st round of draft, also rare. Is he going to make an NHL impact next year? Nope. But the idea and concept behind this trade was very good. Basically a straight across in expected/predictable output for next year, and Bill got an asset that will help the team moving forward.

Then Rafalski decided to retire, and it's unexpected despite him being 38, as he still looked good; not many rumours preceding this announcement.

I do not believe Steve should feel obligated to compensate Bill in this loss, however it is a nice gesture, and one that would make me want to deal with Steve more often, knowing that there is good faith behind his intentions. Well...sometimes.

But seriously, I 100% agree with Nick here.

I was quite shocked to see Rafalski retiring.

I figured he'd finish off his contract and go from there.
