burke is still a senior advisor..

it's been speculated that nonis was a bigger part of making moves than burke was for around a year. I think that they just prefer to let nonis have the final say now.

I'm a fan of this move...Nonis will do a great job I'm sure. And I feel like over the last couple of years, more and more I was noticing Burke have a hard time dealing with the media/other GMs (which is why Nonis used to take on a lot of the media responsibility and trade talks - Phaneuf deal was spearheaded by Nonis too).

here's my theory:

listen to the press conference two quotes really stand out to me #1 "we are in the midst of a rebuild" #2 and I'm paraphrasing here "we do not want to deviate from the plan".. I think bell/Rogers realize this team is in a rebuild something which burke has never admitted, I think burke wanted to acquire lou, he went to the board and they told him no we are nowhere a contending team even with loungo in net.. burke said Fuck it got all loud and foul mouthed, stating he's got autonomy he can do whatever he wants, and the board goes and pulls the rug out from under him

why fire him right now the day before the season starts you ask? .. burke and nonis had a deal in place they are waiting till the cba is ratified, he was scouting marlies last night to get one last look at colborne/kadri to see if they can handle 1st line duty and or which one should be traded/paired up with bozo for a trade

Could be very true,

After watching the TSN special yesterday on the leafs, the belief is the new goalie coach can really turn around Reims. Lets give him a go, worst case we finish last and get a top pick.

It's also the complete opposite of the 'norm' of Burke did not want LU and BOG said GET HIM NOW FATFUCKER!

I disagree completely. If BOTH Burke and Nonis wanted to bring Luongo and the board said no, then Nonis would not have just been given the job - we have a front office with a ton of talent/top level execs with GM jobs on their resumes.

Here is what I think happened:

1. There was a deal on the table for Luongo
2. The deal was being considered and the board was notified
3. Assuming the deal involved Kadri/Colborne in particular
4. Burke ended up being against the deal, while Nonis wanted it. There was a discussion at this point and I'm assuming most of the front office sided with Nonis, while Burke thought it was too much.
5. Burke stuck by his decision on principle and got fired.

Another thing to realize is that now that the owners are Bell and Rogers, there is a motivation to put a better product on the ice as it will mean a better product on TV, Radio, Newspapers, Online etc. Getting Luongo is in the interest of the new owners. Nonis also has a great history with Luongo. My bet is you will see a Luongo deal announced in the next few days once this news cycle dies.

well said, that would fit really well however why come out and state with absolute certainty we are in the midst of a rebuild? are they really that stupid to think lou will magically transform this team into a contender.. and secondly if they really do have that perspective why even mention the word 'rebuild', why not just say there was a disagreement in philosophy we felt we needed to go in a new direction that was contrary to what brian believed

Within minutes of a firing that shook the landscape here at the Board of Governor's meetings, a source confirmed to sportsnet.ca that Burke was unwilling to make the trade that all of his lieutenants inside the Leafs organization were pushing for. That includes Burke's replacement, new Leafs GM Dave Nonis, who will now work towards consummating that trade with the Vancouver Canucks.

It is facile to think that Burke would be fired on the eve of this truncated season solely for not pursuing that deal. The Luongo Affair, however, marks the final straw in a welcome that Burke had apparently worn out over a four-year tenure that did not deliver a single playoff game.

Did McCowan say it? Because he is half retarded sometimes. Unless someone like Kypreos (who usually has a good source) said it, I'd find that hard to believe tbh.

It's funny, I talked to my brother and 3 friends, all Leafs fans, and they all said exactly that steve: If Gardiner is involved, then we are no longer fans.

I almost want it to happen just to see the chaos it would create...almost.
