Why is the trade deadline so close to the end of the season?

Because the people in power are stupid.

It seems like this means teams on the cusp never have to make a choice between being buyers and sellers, and thus this doesn't help non-playoff teams at all, IMO. And this actually does help me as I'm very close to the playoffs right now. I don't have to be a buyer at all. I can just wait it ou and see what happens rather than waste prospects.

I just think this is stupid.

Can someone explain the reasoning behind such a late choice? Is it to keep the league active?

I'd think it has to do with teams making deals that could affect your BBKL team and then not being able to fix your roster via trade.

If you're a playoff team and your goalie all of a sudden no longer plays since an NHL team trades for a new starter I can see why we would allow the GM the chance to add that goaltender rather than saying oh well you now have no starter and you now have no chance to win, too bad for you.

I second this. Should be 6-8 weeks before end of regular season.

It makes no sense.
There is no bearing on our playoffs.
It actively disengages non play off teams from the league for a long time.

The only real purpose it serves is to prevent non play off teams from having some fun while the play off teams get to play. People say they want to focus only on the playoffs, like they actually have to do anything other than set a monday line up.

I disagree entirely.

Cite the time this ever happened. I highly doubt teams with a competitive team BBKL-wise lose their starter. And if it has happened, that's your fault for not recognizing your goaltending isn't adequate, in my opinion

If the whole league can't trade it doesn't make sense for a subset of teams to be able to swap players and the playoff teams miss out on opportunities.

If we truly wanted to end this discussion regarding goaltending and the trade deadline, hoarding goaltenders, etc, we could move to a format where one person holds an entire system.

There are a lot of hurdles to making that system work. So many that I really don't see it happening.

Various options were discussed, the longest away being 4 weeks before the end of the regular season. 2 weeks held majority and here we are.

Woah, hold up. Everyone can trade in the "off season". Off season starts after the last game of the regular season has been played. You can trade regardless of your playoff situation. Trades can be posted, but can't be processed until after the playoffs are over.

Most likely because most (all?) members of the cc are playoff teams.

i have thought about that as well. it's just too late for that as people have drafted goalie prospects over the years and given up value to get the goalies they have now.

In the NHL , non playoff teams are able to complete trades. I think that ends the discussion right there.
