Thought id post this also. I thought i read people mentioning 80 as the NHL limit when it is actually 90. Its a good read. It basically states that if you also have so many RFA's unsigned you can be over your 5 0 man max contracted limit.
Roster Limits
Teams have four different “roster” limits to balance under the league’s regulations; a 20-player “dressed list” for games, a 23-player active NHL roster, a 50-contract maximum, and a 90-player maximum reserve list.

A rebuilding team finding a loophole, makes sence for them to get that extra contract in there

Maybe it's a typo...I've heard that 80 number before. 90 has to be a mistake.
