I've been having this discussion with some of my friends and wanted to see what BBKL thinks.

Ideal scenario for me is if Canada wins. BUT if Canada loses and the US wins with Kessel and JVR doing well/getting that experience, I'll get over the Canada loss and be happy with what that means for the Leafs.

They're Leaf fans too but they think anything other than a Canada win would suck.

Where do you stand?

To be honest, if these were just tournament teams with no national affiliations I would probably find myself cheering for the squad wearing red/white/blue. I'm a huge fan of multiple players on that team.

i would give up gold medals for the rest of my life for 1 leafs cup. however, considering a cup isn't one the line, ill take canada. fuk kessel and jvr (for now)

What if winning gold helps Kessel/JVR in some way? Winning an Olympic Semi-Final vs Canada and an Olympic Final is the closest thing to a Stanley Cup Final Game 7.

unless winning gold will give both of the super powers then they can go fuck themselves until the NHL season resumes

i kinda hav the same feeling with shiv sometimes.. but for me i wish canada wins 8-7 so it shows that price sucks and fucking babcock made the wrong decisions again and that luongo is always then man but gets forgotten by these people

pretty sure to kessel, (for NHL leafs who will pay Kessel 8M), his game 7 loss to the bruins last playoffs hurt him more than the gold medal game loss to canada will

Here is my stance on this in summary:

Kessel is 26, JVR is 24. The Leafs' Stanley Cup window will be the next 5-7 years while these two stay in their prime.

I am not saying there is a direct correlation between winning in the Olympics and winning in the NHL. I am just saying that as Leaf fans, Kessel and JVR getting that experience is only a good thing.

So if Canada loses, I want the US to win.

welll the other way is the same..
if they lost to canada and settle with no medal / silver.. they will gain and learn through the experience to have the mentality for championship games.. this will also fire up kessel and JVR and they at least want to win something...

if they won gold.. they already hav a champ in hand and are settled and happy about it for the rest their life as they already won something.. stanley cup is not important anymore..

so my opinion is you think too much and it's out of leafs fans reach.

I'm actively cheering for Team USA, and have been since the start. I want Team USA to win Gold, and Kessel to get tournament MVP.

Going slightly off topic...I'm pro Team USA first even with little or no Wings connection and so many top players from rival teams on the roster. Then, I'd pull for any team with Wings influence...Sweden at the top of the list. The only time I actually root against Canada is when they play Team USA. By my rules...I'm pulling for Sweden, Russia, Canada and Team USA today.
