Wasn't going to protect hedman. I suspect you'll start seeing value deals like this.
Confirm.

Fair value considering Steve wasn't going to protect Hedman. Interested to see how many deals like this happen due to expansion

Question: does playing 2 years in a non - north American pro league (KHL, SHL, Liiga) mean a player needs to be protected? So for example buchnevich.

My understanding is he is exempt.
AHL/NHL only.

Have we set our rules on this for sure yet? Personally I think 2 AHL 1 NHL season players being available doesn't seem right to me.

We can only lose 1 player each. It's not the end of the world.

I think Steve does well, gets a young cost-controlled D who might not be as good as Hedman but is solid, and he adds a great prospect and two good picks as well. Hedman is UFA after this season as well which makes his cap hit unpredictable going forward.

I'd take Steve's side too but pretty fair.

he still has 1 yr at 4M though, if it was a UFA today would be very different

There are a couple teams who will definitely need to move dmen for expansion. Either trading for futures or upgrading their 2 dmen for 1 better dman.

Easy deal for Steve to make given the circumstances. Hedman could touch 10 m aav after this year.

Depends on the situation too, for me if I expect to lose Andersen I can leave really valuable players unprotected. I can only lose one player so if I lose Andersen then who cares how amazing my other unprotected guys are since they won't be taken or one does and I keep my goalies. Some teams might not have a lot of motivation to worry about trading good players for futures knowing they can only lose one guy.

Yea, i think if you have a clear top8 forwards for example, well it makes sense to consolidate that. But if you have a deeper team and the unprotected guys are all roughly similar value ... you either completely overhaul, or just continue on with business as usual and know you'll lose on of your multiple assets.

Interesting perspective.
