billy still trapped in 2010. where we used to go "no matter what age/skill, centres are always gonna be worth more than a winger"
lol
in reality now, value rests on age + actual skill of player, regardless of age or position

Haha
I think if it was a contender getting Eller ppl would think the price is too cheap. You’re just supposed to be like the other 20ish GMs who only trade to get younger or for prospects/picks instead of improving.

I think he has a decent chance of making the playoffs in the north/west conference this year.

Namestnikov getting a way smaller role than I expected with the Red Wings so far, deal looking more balanced as of now

What role did you think he was going to play? The Wings do have an established top line so all of these veteran signings were to fill needs in the middle 6 while they wait on guys like Raymond to develop. It's not to say that any of Bertuzzi-Larkin-Mantha couldn't be unseated eventually but for now, those are three of the established young pieces on the team.
Of the last two years of Yzerman's free agent signings, I think of lot of these guys are placeholders while the prospects and other homegrown talent develop. Ryan and Namestnikov aren't long-term options. Gagner seems like a good character veteran player to keep around. They signed guys who appear to have good character and work hard. They'll help insulate the youth movement as it progresses.
I don't know how many rebuilds succeed when they just let the kids fend for themselves and they don't put some useful veterans around them to help with the heavy lifting. You just have to point to what the Oilers were for so many years. Losing and leaning entirely on your picks and not supporting them with veterans, it's a longer path to the top. Yzerman knows first hand what it's like to be the hope of a franchise that was near the bottom of the league and to see what kind of a team he needed around him to make his ascent in the league possible. Some guys are just special and have "it" but other young players need the support of veterans and having experience around them is necessary.
