Just in case there's any confusion on the BBKL's part, it's less than 40 games gives Dallas a 2nd round pick - less than 50 games a 3rd.

Hanzal is so far from a #1. But he is a #2 who plays PK1 and is excellent defensively. Classic case of seeing and hearing a few good things, such mentions of a #1 would never be muttered if he was playing on a well-watched team, IMO. Except for Toronto, then everyone & anyone is the next #1.


To be clear, Hanzal barely outscored Hong's toy-boy Turris (1 point), and was well behind Belanger (14 - 35%); and neither of those two are 'number one centre' material, although Turris does have flashes which hint at the potential.

I was suggesting that opportunity might give Hanzal more offensive freedom as he's got a pretty good head for the offensive game - just no freedom to use it when he's playing on the second line and expected to shut down the other team.

I expect more of that skill to come out over time. It wasn't so long ago that people accused Kesler of being an offensive blackhole himself.

I'd argue he had the same opportunity last year, and it's not like playing for the Yotes (or even his own game) he'll ever be told to skip on defensive duties and go for the totals. Comparing to Kesler, who is the exception and had some trends indicating a scoring talent to come (and in a #2 role iirc ) including, but not limited to, point totals increasing in every season (until this one, goals with a massive jump thanks to PP1 iirc).

But fair enough, if you watched Hanzal more then... say 6 or 7 times during the regular seasons and then the playoffs; you've seen him more then me. However I hear what the announcers from opposing team broadcasters say (like Bowen or Garret) and you'd think the guy was going to be Datsyuk. He is 24 (not an 'only' 24 or emphasis on over 20, lots of room either way) and has been a consistent 35point player.
